Siurana: Romanesque Church and Castle Remains

The former Església de Santa Coloma de Siurana was a Romanesque building that probably dates from the 12th or 13th century. A Gothic tombstone from 1330 is set into the wall beside its entrance.

Landscape

Siurana d’Empordà lies on the western edge of the alluvial plain of Alt Empordà, between the catchment areas of the Fluvià and Muga rivers. The Ribera de Siurana crosses the municipality from west to east.

Culture and History

The surviving remains of Castell de Siurana lie around the church and have been incorporated into modern buildings. The streets around the Església de Santa Coloma form the oldest part of Siurana and occupy the site of the former castle.

At Mas Molí de la Ribera is the Pou de glaç, a well-preserved, circular ice house with a dome that was restored in 2019.

One route leads through Baseia, a rural hamlet documented since 1067. Old building structures and architectural elements from the 15th to the 17th century have been preserved there. Visible medieval remains have been preserved at Cal Robusto. The historical period therefore extends from the hamlet’s early documentation to later structural alterations and the restoration of the ice house.
