Discover Palau-Sator: Townscape, Church and Rural Culture
Culture and History
Palau-Sator preserves an old feudal appearance. The walled ensemble of Palau-sator is classified as a BCIN (Conjunt Històric). A large part of the medieval walls and towers of Palau-sator has been preserved. Today, their course can be traced almost in its entirety. The castle tower stands in the centre of Palau-sator. It is located within the medieval walled district and at the highest point of the hill. The southern gate of the walled district lies beneath the Torre de les Hores. This tower dates from the 14th century. The historical character is therefore reflected in the combination of the town fortifications, the central castle tower and a preserved gateway. The walls, towers and gate can be viewed not only individually, but together form the architectural framework of the former town centre.
Outside the former fortified town centre lies the Església de Sant Pere de Palau-sator. It is a single-nave building with a semicircular apse. For planning the timing of a visit, there is no public opening schedule for the Església de Sant Pere de Palau-sator. Admission to the Església de Sant Pere de Palau-sator is free. Some guided tours offered there are chargeable. The church's location outside the former fortified district distinguishes it spatially from the walls, towers and castle tower in the town centre. Its single-nave layout and semicircular apse define the building's distinct architectural character.
Historical Music
The cobla of Palau-sator began playing in the mid-19th century or probably earlier. Historically, the cobla performed mainly at patron saint's festivals. These festivals took place in villages in the wider surrounding area. Its history is therefore part of the traditional festival culture and is chronologically connected with the mid-19th century or an earlier period. The area in which it performed extended beyond the town itself to villages in the wider surrounding area.
Landscape
The municipality of Palau-sator contains a rich alluvial plain. It lies on the right bank of the Daró River. The plain is located near the Estany de Pals. The area around Palau-sator is distinctly shaped by agriculture. Livestock farming is also one of the area's defining uses. The landscape thus combines the alluvial plain with the riverbank of the Daró and the proximity of the Estany de Pals. Agriculture and livestock farming describe the area's use as well as its rural character.
Museum and Crafts
The Museu Rural de Palau Sator was created through the recovery of old tools and machines. These objects come from agriculture and from the context of rural life in the region. In addition to agricultural items, the Museu Rural also includes tools from related crafts. The exhibition is supplemented by audiovisual content. This content relates to craftspeople and work in the fields. As a result, the museum encompasses not only agricultural equipment and machinery, but also the craft activities associated with rural life. The audiovisual contributions also focus on the people behind the tools: craftspeople and work in the fields. In this way, objects, crafts and agricultural work are brought together within the same exhibition.
