Gavarres and Trails

Sant Martí Vell is located on the northern edge of the Gavarres massif. The area is predominantly mountainous and features pine and holm oak forests. Pine and holm oak forests therefore shape the landscape just as much as the mountainous terrain. Several signposted hiking trails run through the municipality, allowing visitors to experience its cultural and scenic diversity.

Hiking

One specifically named route leads from Sant Martí Vell to Vilosa. It runs via the hamlet of Puig to the Vilosa spring. The long-distance trail PR-C 195 runs along the northern side of the Gavarres from Girona to Sant Martí Vell, also passing through Celrà and Juià. Thus, the described trail connections range from a route between a town, a hamlet and a spring to a long-distance trail along the Gavarres. For preparation, marked hiking trails are best checked against current information on trail conditions and the route. For a long-distance trail, checking the planned section is also part of travel planning.

Two main roads connect Sant Martí Vell with Girona, Madremanya and La Bisbal. The three named destinations are therefore connected to Sant Martí Vell via the road network.

Churches and History

The present-day Església de Sant Martí Vell dates from the 16th century and is documented as early as 1035. Its exterior features numerous gargoyles. The Santuari de la Mare de Déu dels Àngels dates back to an authorization granted in 1409 by the parish priest of Sant Martí Vell and was completed around 1420.
