Cornellà Del Terri: Festivals, Churches and the Terri

The Terri River flows through Cornellà del Terri. The Terri forms a green walking connection linking Lake Banyoles with the plain of the Terri Valley and the Ter River.

Hiking

Several sections of the Soldats de Salamina routes pass through Cornellà del Terri. Route 38 takes approximately two hours without breaks and is intended for people who are accustomed to hiking. Shortly after starting at Plaça de Maig, it leads to Capella de Sant Antoni and continues via Plaça de Maig in Cornellà del Terri. Capella de Sant Antoni is located within the village, approximately 50 metres on foot from the village square.

Festivals

Cornellà del Terri’s main festival coincides with Easter and centres on the raising of the Arbre del Maig. Particularly prominent elements of the Festa Major include raising the Arbre del Maig and the Ball del Cornut. At midday on Easter Monday, residents ceremonially raise the decorated Arbre del Maig in the middle of the square. The tradition was recognised by the Generalitat de Catalunya in 1999 as a Festa Tradicional d’Interès Nacional. The Ball del Cornut is danced around the Arbre del Maig; the dancers move through the village while dancing.

Cuisine

The Fira de l’All takes place on the first weekend of October and showcases varieties of garlic produced in the comarca. At the Fira de l’All, visitors can try Botifall, a sausage prepared with garlic. The event also includes a workshop where participants can learn how to braid garlic.

Culture

The Centre Cultural on Plaça del Maig offers activities for all age groups as well as seasonal courses and workshops. A tour of the Xocolates Torras factory provides insights into the company’s production processes. The visit includes an immersive 360-degree projection about the origins of cocoa, chocolate production and the hundred-year history of Chocolates Torras.

Església de Santa Eulàlia de Pujals dels Cavallers is a church of Romanesque origin with a single-nave layout, a semicircular apse and a pointed barrel vault. The church preserves a Gothic limestone baptismal font. Castell de Ravós del Terri has a trapezoidal layout and a round tower at each corner. Església de Sant Julià de Corts has a Romanesque travertine portal with two stepped archivolts and figurative and vegetal low-relief motifs.

Pont medieval de Sant Andreu del Terri crosses the Terri on three round arches. Pont medieval de Sords was the former crossing over the Terri used by the residents of Sords. The present-day Església de Sant Esteve de Sords is of Romanesque origin. The Romanesque fabric from the 12th century includes the apse with a double-splayed window, the pointed barrel vault of the nave and the cornice.

Capella de Sant Antoni was part of the now-vanished castle of Cornellà. The Romanesque wall paintings in the apse of Església de Sant Cugat de Ravós del Terri depict Christ in Majesty, the Tetramorph and two angels. The bell tower of Església de Sant Galderic de Santa Llogaia del Terri is said to have been built on the remains of an earlier fortified tower.
