Mieres: Hiking Trails, Churches and Catalan Traditions

From Mieres, the municipal route “De Mieres a l’Ermita del Freixe pel camí de les Marrades” leads to the Ermita del Freixe. The municipal route “De Mieres al Santuari de Finestres pel collet de la Devesa” provides a hiking connection from Mieres to the Santuari de Finestres.

Hiking

The “Ruta de los carboneros. Ruta 2 Mieres” follows paths that were formerly used to transport coal and connects the Ruïtlles district with the Ermita del Freixe.

“El balcón de Mieres” is a circular hike that climbs from Mieres towards the Sierra de Finestres. It leads to the Collet de la Devesa and the Coll de Palomera; from Coll de la Palomera, the route continues to the Talaia, a viewpoint overlooking the surroundings of Mieres.

The “Ruta de los carboneros y el bac. Ruta 3 Mieres” is a circular route that climbs from the village of Mieres to Santa Maria del Freixe.

Culture

The visible structure of the Poblat i tailaia ibèrics is a square dry-stone construction that has been interpreted as a defensive structure. It is accessed via a forest track connecting Mieres with the municipality of Sant Aniol de Finestres.

The Església de Sant Pere stands on a small hill above Mieres. The Catalan neoclassical building was erected over an older Romanesque church.

The Església de Santa Maria de Romeria is located in Mieres’s oldest district, la Cellera, and preserves Romanesque remains despite extensive renovations.

The Església de Santa Maria del Freixe has been documented since 972. The Església de Ruïtlles is privately owned and cannot be visited.

Festivals and Traditions

The Processó dels Dolors in Mieres dates back to the 18th century.

During Setmana Santa, a Passion play with two settings is performed: inside the church and simultaneously in the streets and squares of the village; it is performed by amateur actors.

During Setmana Santa, an excerpt from the Passion of Jesus is performed in the Església de Sant Pere de Mieres.

The Can Met restaurant at the entrance to Mieres offers Catalan and traditional cuisine prepared with locally sourced products.

Can Met’s specialities include snails “a la llauna”, Girona beef fillet with morel sauce, shoulder of lamb and rabbit with snails.
