Fontanilles: Landscape, Castellot and Sant Martí

Landscape

Fontanilles lies on the summits of two small hills. Most of the municipality consists of an alluvial plain. Gentle hills rise to the west. From Fontanilles or Puig de Miramar, there are sweeping views across the cultivated landscape of the plain. Rows of willows and poplars border this cultivated landscape. Puig de Miramar is 54 metres high. If you would like to choose a viewpoint for planning your day, you can choose between Fontanilles and Puig de Miramar. The River Daró runs through the municipality of Fontanilles.

The plain makes up most of the municipality, while the gentle hills in the west are described as a distinct landscape form. The rows of willows and poplars form part of the boundary of the plain.

History and buildings

Fontanilles has been documented since 965. The church of Sant Martí de Fontanilles was consecrated in 965. Arnulf, the bishop of Girona, consecrated the church. Later additions conceal the original form of the Romanesque church of Sant Martí de Fontanilles. If you would like to include the buildings in your cultural plans for the day, you can note Sant Martí de Fontanilles as a named point of interest.

The ruins of Fontanilles’ medieval castle are popularly known as Castellot. On the upper part of the Castellot ruins, the foundation of another round tower can still be seen. To explore the building, you can note the name Castellot together with the visible foundation of the round tower.

Walking

The Passejada per Gualta i Fontanilles is an easy circular walk. Its route is 5.5 kilometres long. The circular route includes 100 metres of elevation gain. It takes two hours. When planning your day, you can note the walk as a separate item with a clearly defined distance, elevation gain and stated duration.
