l'Armentera: Fluvià Plain, Aiguamolls and Historical Traces

l'Armentera is located on the alluvial plain at the mouth of the Fluvià. The municipality is one of those that make up the Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l'Empordà; the nature park can be accessed via l'Armentera.

Nature

The protected landscape includes the areas around the Riu Vell and its two meanders. They are incorporated into the Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, the PEIN and the Natura 2000 network. The Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l'Empordà consists of ponds, enclosed fields and flooded meadows and provides a particularly important habitat for waterbirds.

History

The parish of Sant Martí de Tours in l'Armentera has been documented since 974. The current building of the Església de Sant Martí de Tours dates from the 19th century and stands on foundations from the 12th and 13th centuries. Paintings by Joan B. Panyó depicting the four mysteries of the Rosary have also been preserved.

The church has a single-nave body, a transept, side chapels and a pentagonal apse; its design is Neoclassical. Another historical monument is the Búnquer in l'Armentera, a T-shaped concrete structure with two rectangular sections and embrasures in both parts. Above the main portal of Can Moret is the inscription “JACOBUS VIADER ME FECIT – 1686”, while the year 1820 is carved into the keystone of the flattened arch above the entrance to Can Muñoz.

El molí de l'Armentera was historically the most important mill in the County of Empúries and was restored from 1733 onwards. The machine-gun nest in l'Armentera belonged to the second line of passive coastal defence and is located next to the road between Sant Pere Pescador and l'Armentera.

Things to do

The municipality's tourism section lists a hiking route entitled “Itinerari pel marge dret del Fluvià”. The long-distance GR 92 trail also passes through l'Armentera: the fifth stage from Sant Pere Pescador to L'Escala runs through the village. For cyclists, the Ruta cicloturística L'Escala-Empúries al Fluvià passes through l'Armentera and then continues to the Fluvià River. When preparing for hikes and long-distance stages, current route conditions should be taken into account; the respective route should be checked before departure. For cycling tours, it is advisable to check the current route conditions before setting off.

Cuisine

At the XXIX Fira de la Poma in l'Armentera, there were stalls offering various apple varieties and natural apple juice. The Fira de la Poma also includes demonstrations and tastings of cooked apple dishes and apple alioli. The municipality described one year as the 30th anniversary year of the Fira de la Poma de l'Armentera. The Fira de la Poma in l'Armentera is supposed to take place every year in October. The date of the Fira de la Poma should be checked before travelling.
