Sales de Llierca: Romanesque Churches and Hiking Trails

Sales de Llierca is located in Alta Garrotxa between the Llierca and Borró rivers. The municipality comprises a southern plain and mountains to the north.
Landscape and Nature
Above the left bank of the Llierca River, Santa Cecília de Sadernes stands on a hill in a landscape shaped by the cliffs of Gitarriu. Sant Grau d’Entreperes is located on the ridge separating the valleys of the Llierca and Borró rivers.
The headquarters of the consortium for the protection and management of the Alta Garrotxa Area of Special Natural Interest, founded in 2000, is located in the Rectoria de Sadernes in the municipality of Sales de Llierca.

Culture and Buildings
Sant Martí de Sales is a church built between the late 17th and early 18th centuries, with a Baroque façade. A small chapel dedicated to Sant Jordi was built on the ruins of Castell de Sales; the castle was constructed next to a fortified house with a round-plan tower.
The footpath from the village to Castell de Sales takes about 30 minutes. Santa Cecília de Sadernes is a 12th-century Romanesque church with a single-nave layout, a semicircular apse and a bell gable that was converted into a defensive tower.
Sant Grau d’Entreperes is a heavily modified 12th-century Romanesque church. Sant Andreu de Gitarriu is a single-nave Romanesque church with a barrel vault and semicircular apse; its west wall has a two-arched bell gable.
Pont de Valentí is a large medieval single-arch bridge and serves as the entrance to the Route de Sant Aniol d’Aguja. Sant Miquel de Monteia is a 12th-century Romanesque church in the territory of Sales de Llierca.
Hiking
The Sant Miquel and Sant Grau hiking route begins at Sant Martí de Sales and heads towards Sant Miquel de Monteia. Continuing along the route to Sant Grau d’Entreperes, the path climbs to the 1,053-metre-high summit of La Calma; from there, there are views across the whole of Garrotxa and part of Empordà.
The cycle tour known as the Ruta cicloturística de la vall del Llierca passes through the plain between Castellfollit de la Roca, Pont del Llierca, Sales de Llierca and Argelaguer.
Tradition
The Aplec de Sant Aniol is also known as the Aplec dels Francesos and is a centuries-old tradition, first documented in 1733. A documented programme for the Aplec de Sant Aniol included a mass, a procession, sardanas, a communal rice dish and traditional games.
