Caldes de Malavella: Spas, Cultural Heritage and Nature Trails

The Roman Baths were built in the 1st century AD and are the best-preserved remains of the Roman settlement of Aquae Calidae, present-day Caldes de Malavella.
Culture
The Roman Baths of Puig de Sant Grau are the most significant architectural feature of Caldes de Malavella and a monument designated as a Cultural Asset of National Interest.
The Modernist buildings in Caldes de Malavella are associated with the emergence of the spa industry at the end of the 19th century.
Espai AQUAE is a museum centre in the former castle of Caldes de Malavella; part of a wall and three medieval towers remain from this castle.
The natural and cultural heritage of Caldes de Malavella is presented there in nine exhibition areas.
The tour of Caldes de Malavella’s municipal heritage is designed to include 15 sites.
Camp dels Ninots is designated as a Cultural Asset of National Interest in the palaeontological zone category.
The formation is an explosive volcanic maar-diatreme formation of hydromagmatic origin with an irregular shape.
Its crater, covering approximately 275,000 m², filled with water after volcanic activity ended and formed a lake.
Camp dels Ninots preserves an exceptional palaeontological assemblage of animals and plants from the Pliocene, dating to between 3 and 3.3 million years ago.
Nature and Trails
The municipality of Caldes de Malavella has signposted nature trails with a combined length of more than 140 kilometres.
The Ruta Termal is 13.8 kilometres long.
The urban section of the Ruta Termal runs through Caldes de Malavella; there are three mineral-medicinal thermal springs there, which naturally emerge from the ground and reach an average temperature of 56°C.
Along the route, you can taste thermal water from the springs at a temperature of around 60°C.
The BTT route at Sant Maurici is an 8.6-kilometre circular route leading to the summit of Monte de Sant Maurici.
Routes and Getting There
Malavella Castle lies along the EuroVelo 8 route.
Caldes de Malavella railway station is served by the Barcelona Sants–Portbou and L’Hospitalet de Llobregat–Figueres/Portbou connections.
History
The Aplec de Sant Maurici was held in 2022 for the 178th time; it included a group walk to the hermitage, a religious service, Sardanas, the traditional dance of the Hereu Riera, and a communal meal.
Malavella Castle is being restored and refurbished at the Sant Maurici site; a project finally approved in September 2025 is intended to make it accessible for safe visits.
The restoration includes improvements to access routes, signage and internal paths to facilitate future public visits and provide a safer, clearer tour.
