Sant Feliu de Buixalleu: History, Landscapes and Gastronomy

History and Culture

The remains of Castell de Montsoriu rise at the western edge of the municipality of Sant Feliu de Buixalleu. In the 13th century, Castell de Montsoriu became the residence of the Counts of Cabrera.

Gorg d’en Perxistó, also known as Gorg Negre, is located in Gaserans below the farmhouse of Perxa d’Astor, which is now called Can Perxistó. Gorg d’en Perxistó is associated with the murder of the Count of Barcelona, Ramon Berenguer II, known as Cap d’Estopes, on 5 December 1082. A memorial monument at this site displays the family tree of the entire Catalan dynasty of that period.

The Ermita de Sant Segimon del Bosc dates from the 10th century. The Ermita de Santa Bàrbara dates from the 16th century and is located near the parish church of Sant Feliu de Buixalleu at the highest point. The parish of Grions is dominated by the 17th-century parish church of Sant Gabriel de Grions.

According to the legend of Torre de la Mora, a Christian knight fell in love with a Moorish girl and confined her in a tower on a hill. The Església de Sant Feliu de Buixalleu was first mentioned in a document in 1019 and has Romanesque origins. The lower part of its bell tower features twin windows with round arches.

Casa forta de la Torre de Grions is a former fortified house and is now a farmhouse; the walled enclosure and the base of a medieval tower have been preserved.

Paths and Landscapes

The footpath from the public car park to the entrance of Castell de Montsoriu is 2.8 kilometres long and takes 30 to 40 minutes. For cyclists and hikers, Castell de Montsoriu is an excellent destination for signposted routes starting from the surrounding municipalities of Arbúcies, Breda, Riells i Viabrea and Sant Feliu de Buixalleu.

The route is designated as a footpath; its length and duration fully describe the section from the public car park to the entrance of Castell de Montsoriu, making the time required for the access route clear.

Sant Feliu de Buixalleu has a strongly rural character. The northern part of the municipality is mountainous and lies on the foothills of the Montseny and Guilleries mountain ranges. Holm oaks, cork oaks, stone pines and chestnut trees are common in this area.
