Llambilles – Culture, Gavarres and Via Verda

Culture

Llambilles includes a wooded area of the Massís de les Gavarres, with hilly landscapes characterised by pine and cork oak trees that contrast with the cultivated plain. The parish church of Llambilles is dedicated to Sant Cristòfol. The present building is Gothic, features Baroque elements and was built on Romanesque foundations. The façade has a Baroque appearance, with a portal formed by wedge-shaped voussoirs and a rose window.

The Capella de la Mare de Déu de la Pietat a Erols dates back to the 12th century. During its restoration, the original stone altar was uncovered. La Roca de les 30 Creus is a medium-sized stone in the forest with more than thirty carved crosses. La Torre is listed in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. The rural complex consists of an old farmhouse with several outbuildings and an eclectic extension from the last century; this extension has a rectangular floor plan, a tower and a large hall on the upper floor.

The Ermita de Sant Cristòfol del Bosc de Llambilles is a Romanesque church with a rectangular floor plan and a slightly pointed semicircular apse.

History

The Estació del Carrilet de Llambilles preserves the local trace of a narrow-gauge railway. The Carrilet railway line connected Sant Feliu de Guíxols with Girona and opened on 29 June 1892. The Via Verda across the Llambilles plain is used by both cyclists and pedestrians and follows the former Carrilet railway route from Quart to Cassà de la Selva.

The Sant Cristòfol del Bosc route illustrates various forest types found in the Gavarres: holm oak forests, cork oak forests, pine forests, chestnut forests and riverside forests.

Things to do

The Passejant per Llambilles route passes through the cultivated landscape of Llambilles and continues to the secluded Ermita de Sant Cristòfol del Bosc. The Ermita de Sant Cristòfol del Bosc has been used since it reopened for worship on 1 November 1981. The Sant Cristòfol del Bosc route has a recreation area with picnic tables. The Festa Major de Llambilles includes, among other events, Llambijocs, Llambitast and the Inèdit Festival.

The landscape of Llambilles thus extends from the cultivated plain to the wooded area of the Massís de les Gavarres. Alongside pine and cork oak trees, holm oaks, chestnut trees and riverside forests also shape the landscape described there. The Passejant per Llambilles route leads from the cultivated landscape to the secluded hermitage, while the Sant Cristòfol del Bosc route connects the various forest types with the recreation area featuring picnic tables. In addition, the Estació del Carrilet preserves the local memory of the narrow-gauge railway. Its former connection between Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Girona began with its opening on 29 June 1892; today, the Via Verda between Quart and Cassà de la Selva follows part of this former route.
