Cadaqués: Church, Dalí and Cap de Creus

Cadaqués is a seafaring town and has been designated a “Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional”. Calle del Call preserves Cadaqués’ traditional Rastell paving in the best-preserved form found in the town.

This street already shows that the town’s history remains visible not only through individual buildings, but also through preserved elements in public spaces. Its historic character continues in the church, the musical tradition and its connection with Salvador Dalí.

Culture and history

The Church of Santa Maria de Cadaqués contains a Baroque altarpiece. The work is 23 metres high and dedicated to the Mare de Déu de l’Esperança. Cadaqués has also preserved an organ created by Josep Boscà between 1689 and 1691. It is considered one of the oldest organs in Catalonia.

The altarpiece and the organ therefore belong to different periods in the history of the same church: the Baroque work shapes the interior through its height and dedication, while the organ, bearing the name Josep Boscà and dating from between 1689 and 1691, represents a distinct historical testimony.

The Church of Santa Maria de Cadaqués hosts the Festival Internacional de Música de Cadaqués every year. Casa Salvador Dalí was the artist Salvador Dalí’s residence for forty years. A reservation in advance is required to visit Casa Salvador Dalí.

The Museu de Cadaqués presents changing exhibitions related to Cadaqués. Their changing content therefore takes up the connection with this place in each case.

Thus, in Cadaqués, permanently visible local history exists alongside cultural offerings that change over time. In addition to the historical perspective, the musical event in the church, the Dalí residence and the museum’s exhibitions add independent cultural connections.

Cap de Creus natural area

The Parc Natural de Cap de Creus covers the territory of eight municipalities, including Cadaqués. The natural park was established in 1998. It was Catalonia’s first maritime-terrestrial natural park.

The designation as a maritime-terrestrial protected landscape therefore encompasses both the marine area and the land area. Cadaqués is one of eight municipalities whose territory is included in the natural park.

In total, the Parc Natural de Cap de Creus covers 13,886 hectares. Of this, 3,090 hectares consist of marine area and 10,386 hectares of land area. At Espai Cap de Creus, the geological, plant and animal development of the surrounding area is presented scientifically.

The division of the total area makes the natural area’s different character visible in numerical terms: the marine area and the land area are listed separately and together make up the park’s total size.
