Vilafant: Brickmaking History, Manol Riverbanks and Empordà Culture

Vilafant combines striking reminders of its industrial history with medieval religious and defensive buildings, the River Manol, and a cuisine rooted in the Empordà. One particularly distinctive landmark is the imposing chimney of La Bòbila d’en Soler. The facility dates from the 19th and 20th centuries and represents brickmaking in the municipality. The chimney makes this part of the town’s history immediately visible.

History and Culture

The church of Sant Cebrià takes visitors back to a much earlier era. It dates from the 12th century and was renovated in the 17th century. The castle of Palol Sabaldòria is also of medieval origin. A ruin dating from the 11th and 12th centuries has been preserved. The remains of the pre-Romanesque church of Sant Miquel are located on the same grounds. They are situated within an enclosed property. The castle complex and church remains thus represent several historical construction phases in one place.

Landscape Along the Manol

The Manol crosses the southern part of the municipality of Vilafant. Along the river, paths and trails in a natural setting shape the landscape. They are complemented by characteristic Mediterranean flora and fauna. A notable landscape feature is the Alzina de la Font de Can Massanet. The tree stands above the Font de Can Massanet spring, in an orchard landscape along the River Manol. There is also a circular walking route along the banks of the Manol, incorporating the river as a recurring element of the landscape.

Culinary Tradition

The regional cuisine also has a historical connection. Pomes de “relleno” are a culinary tradition dating from the 18th century. This speciality is rooted in Vilafant and throughout the Empordà. Alongside buildings and landscapes, a traditional dish is therefore also part of the local history. Its historical dating points to a tradition connected with the Empordà beyond today’s municipal area.

Cultural Attractions Nearby

Several independent cultural attractions are located near Vilafant. These include the Museu de L'Electricitat, the Dalí Theatre and Museum, the Dali Museum, and the Museu de la Tècnica de l'Empordà. The two Dali museums should be understood as separate attractions. Together with Sant Cebrià and Palol Sabaldòria, they create a cultural spectrum ranging from local church and castle history to museums in the surrounding area.

The Butterfly Park Empuriabrava is located in the area surrounding Vilafant. Mont-Roig and Santa Magdalena are also nearby. Platja de la Gola is located in the wider regional surroundings of Vilafant. These attractions complement the local themes with further points of interest in the region, without equating their different geographical contexts.
