Sant Miquel De Fluvià: Monastery Church, Nature and Ruta 170

The church of the Monestir de Sant Miquel de Fluvià stands in Sant Miquel De Fluvià and was consecrated in 1066. It has a basilica-style floor plan with a short transept and a group of three apses. The consecration and the clearly described architectural form give the church building both a chronological and an architectural framework.

Culture and History

Archaeological and restoration work at the Monestir de Sant Miquel de Fluvià has enhanced and brought to light new elements such as the moat, the course of the cloister and the former abbot’s palace. The work therefore concerns not only the church building but also other parts of the former monastery complex. The Forn Romà de Sant Miquel de Fluvià was discovered in 1974 during road construction work. It is a vertical, single-chamber kiln with a square floor plan. A central pillar supports the grate. Following restoration, the kiln is well preserved; it is protected by a solid masonry structure. Its discovery during road construction, its distinctive construction and the current protective structure are among the key features of this Roman relic.

Nature and Water

The Fluvià River is an ecological connecting corridor between the volcanic area of La Garrotxa and the coastal region. It is home to interesting vertebrate fauna, including Mediterranean barbel and otters. The river therefore connects two differently characterised landscapes while also providing a habitat for the animal species mentioned.

The excess water from the La font i el rentador spring was initially channelled into a public livestock trough and then into the village washhouse. This washhouse was rebuilt during the Second Republic. The sequence of livestock trough and washhouse documents the former use of the spring water in the village. La font i el rentador was protected by a stone porch at the end of the 19th century. A rectangular platform was built in front of the porch, with benches arranged along its sides. The spring is accessed via a staircase with numerous steps.

Festivals and Routes

Since 2023, the Fira Oficis has taken place on the first Sunday in June. The event features demonstrations of traditional crafts as well as stalls selling handicrafts and food products. The fixed date combines the craft demonstrations with the market offering of handicrafts and various food products.

Two types of visits are offered in Sant Miquel de Fluvià. Both are open to all groups of visitors. The Ruta 170 is a fairly flat circular hiking route. It begins in Sant Miquel de Fluvià and passes through the districts of Palau and Santa Eulàlia. The circular route connects its starting point in the town with the two districts mentioned while remaining fairly flat in its layout.
