Sant Miquel De Campmajor: Trails, Water and Romanesque Buildings

The La Volta a la Vall stage route circles the entire municipal area of Sant Miquel de Campmajor, is more than 48 kilometres long and is divided into six stages.

Trails

The individual stages of La Volta a la Vall are not circular routes but run between a start point and a destination. Each stage requires one vehicle at the destination and another at the start. The Ruta de la serra de Campmajor is a circular route that connects the farmhouses of the Serra de Campmajor with the Vall de Campmajor via trails. El Pont de Can Prat forms part of several hiking trails that pass through the municipal area of Sant Miquel de Campmajor. BTT Route 5, “De Briolf i Guixeres”, is a cycling route. A walk to the Gorga del Diable leads to the River Ser, to a spot near a large rocky cliff.

Nature

The Castanyer de Sant Nicolau is a sweet chestnut tree protected by the Generalitat de Catalunya. Its trunk has a circumference of 9.65 metres, while its crown reaches up to 17 metres in height. In the valley of Sant Miquel de Campmajor there are pools, springs and small ponds that have formed over the centuries. Around thirty of these ponds lie in two larger areas near the Riera de Sant Miquel. The Font de la Borada emerges from the rocks, forming a small pond and the beginning of a stream.

Culture

The Església de Sant Miquel de Campmajor is a church of Romanesque origin and was built between the 11th and 12th centuries. Original apses with Lombard blind arcades have been preserved at the church. The sacred building has three naves and three apses. The medieval ensemble of Sant Esteve de Briolf includes a small Romanesque church dating from the 11th to the 13th century. The Torre de Briolf is a Romanesque defensive tower known as a “mas-torre”, meaning a fortified tower farmhouse; it was used to control the Vall de Campmajor. The Església de Sant Martí de Campmajor, also known as Santa Quitèria, was built in 844 on the orders of Abbot Elies of the Monastery of Sant Esteve de Banyoles.

Tradition

At the Aplec de Santa Quitèria, villagers knead round, almost wafer-thin flatbreads by hand from flour and water without yeast. The flatbreads are baked in a wood-fired oven.
