Culture and history

Els Hostalets d'en Bas developed in the 18th century around an inn at the foot of the old royal road between Olot and Vic. On Carrer Teixeda, this historic part of the village is characterised by restored, adjoining houses, each with a threshing floor in front. The Conjunt dels Hostalets d’en Bas is listed as a historic-artistic ensemble.

A much older period is evidenced by the Zona de l’Aubert/Hostalets archaeological site, which is dated to the 6th and 7th centuries AD. In l’Aubert, remains of several dwellings with various rooms, an oven and possibly stables were found, along with pottery, bracelets, other jewellery and agricultural tools.

The groups of finds also paint a varied picture of life in earlier times: living spaces, an oven, possible stables, pottery, jewellery and agricultural tools stand side by side.

Landscape

In front of Els Hostalets d'en Bas, the Falgars Cliffs stand out as a distinctive mountain feature. Close to the village, on a hill in an oak grove, lies the simple Romanesque Capella Sant Simplici o Ximplí. Surrounded by meadows and oak trees, the chapel offers an impressive view of the Falgars Cliffs.

The landscape around the chapel combines several clearly defined elements: the hill as its location, the oak grove as its surroundings, the meadows all around and the Falgars Cliffs as a visible mountain feature. The character of the place is thus reflected both in its historic buildings and in the landscape forms described.

Trails

A direct path from Els Hostalets leads to the Sant Miquel de Falgars chapel. The “D’Hostalets a Sant Miquel de Castelló” hiking route runs from Hostalets to Sant Miquel de Castelló. The route from Els Hostalets to Sant Privat is considered not very strenuous on foot or by bicycle.

At 44 km, the Camí Ral de Vic a Olot forms a longer connection between Vic and Olot. Its old paved surface is particularly well preserved in the Les Marrades area. This historic route begins in the village of Els Hostalets and is signposted according to the Diputació de Barcelona's signage model.

Local tradition

The Dia de la Dalla takes place every year in Els Hostalets d'en Bas. It is held in late May or early June; the event includes a competition with a show element, in which more than fifty scythe mowers take part.
