Discover Lladó: Monastery, Art and MTB Routes

The monumental complex of Santa Maria de Lladó Monastery is considered one of the most significant examples of medieval architecture in Catalonia. At the same time, the monastery is classified as a cultural asset of national interest as a historic monument. This classification combines the architectural importance of the complex with its recognised status as a cultural monument.

Culture

Sant Feliu de Lladó was first documented in 1017. The present building was constructed in the 18th century by Prior Tomàs Verdaguer. This establishes both an early documented mention and a specific construction period, as well as the name of the responsible prior, for Sant Feliu de Lladó. Sant Feliu de Lladó is currently closed for religious services. This current status is part of the description of the religious building and should be taken into account when classifying the site.

The Sala d’exposicions Sidrach also preserves part of the local cultural history. It displays part of the legacy of the artist Moisès Sidrach, who came from Lladó. His artistic work encompasses sculpture, painting and drawing. The exhibition therefore brings together a local connection and three different artistic forms of expression, without limiting the legacy to just one genre.

The Ermita dels Apòstols stands on a hill in a forest. The religious building is thus explicitly associated with an elevated location and a wooded setting. Both details form part of the geographical description of the hermitage and add another named site to Lladó’s historic cultural attractions.

Landscape and MTB Routes

The Ruta BTT 28: Bassegoda is a challenging, long-distance route that starts directly in Lladó. It involves a substantial change in elevation and runs from the Empordà plain to La Garrotxa. Its starting point, route characteristics and course combine to create a route connecting two different landscapes. The tour therefore includes both its start in Lladó and its challenging, long-distance character, substantial elevation change, and connection between the Empordà plain and La Garrotxa.

The Ruta BTT 26: L’ermita de l’Estela follows paths between forests and fields. The focus of this tour is therefore the change between these two types of surroundings. The Ruta BTT 27: Sant Martí Sesserres offers another combination of activity and culture. Several Romanesque hermitages lie along its route, linking it with historic religious buildings in the landscape. The two route descriptions therefore refer to different paths or landscapes: the Ruta BTT 26 features forests and fields, while the Ruta BTT 27 features the Romanesque hermitages located along its course.

Events and Regional Specialities

The Fira Catalana del Formatge Artesà de Lladó offers a hands-on cheese tasting. The event name refers to the theme of artisan cheese, while the hands-on tasting describes the specific format of the offering.

The programme at the Teatre Sindicat de Lladó includes concerts and theatre performances. This means that both musical and performing arts events are listed for this venue.
