Discover Corçà: Medieval Churches and the Món-Empordà Market

Corçà preserves a medieval layout in its historic centre. On Plaça del Rebot, a section of wall approximately 30 m long, 10 m high and 1.40 m thick forms part of the surviving remains of the fortifications known as “Les muralles i el Castell de Corçà”.

Culture and History

At the exit of Corçà towards Anyells stands the 18th-century chapel of Sant Sebastià. In the middle of the town, on Plaça de l’Església, stands the parish church of Sant Julià de Corçà. The church is documented in a will dating from 1065. Sant Julià de Corçà was rebuilt in the 17th or 18th century; parts of the earlier Romanesque church have been preserved.

The ecclesiastical buildings mentioned above are therefore located at different points in the town’s layout: Sant Julià is on Plaça de l’Església in the centre, while Sant Sebastià is at the exit towards Anyells. The medieval structure of the historic centre and the surviving fortification remains complement this spatial sequence.

Santa Cristina de Corçà is protected as a cultural asset of local interest and is listed in the Catalan Inventory of Architectural Heritage under number IPAC 7018. The building consists of a single nave and a semicircular apse that tends towards a horseshoe shape. The base of the apse appears to date from the 10th century, while the rest of the building is attributed to the 12th or 13th century.

At Santa Cristina, the architectural elements are therefore assigned to different periods: the base of the apse is thought to date from the 10th century, while the rest of the building belongs to the 12th or 13th century. Landscape

Corçà lies in a gently undulating landscape of fields, small woods and quiet paths. The paths connect farmhouses, hamlets and settlements. For an understanding of the area, these rural routes form part of the described landscape alongside the town centre.

Markets

If you include the ecological Món-Empordà market in your schedule, the second Saturday of the month is the relevant calendar date; the market takes place on Plaça del Firal de Corçà. The Món-Empordà markets also feature talks, workshops, music and art. The additional formats range from discussion sessions and workshops to musical and artistic contributions.

Art and Events

At Art & Gavarres, the participating artists spend a week creating works from natural materials on site.

The guided event “Temples de Corçà Espais Medievals” was scheduled for 29 August 2026 and was intended to provide access to the interiors of several important churches in the municipality of Corçà. The date and the tour concerned several churches within the municipality.
