Figueres: Dalí, Museums and Historic Sites

The Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres houses the artist’s largest collection, with more than 1,500 works in a variety of styles and formats. The museum is located in the building of Figueres’s former Municipal Theatre.

Casa Natal Salvador Dalí offers a guided route featuring holograms, talking windows, mapping and visual effects, giant kaleidoscopes, and immersive landscapes. The Museu de l'Empordà brings together significant works from the Catalan and Empordanese art scenes. Its collections include archaeology, medieval art and Baroque painting. The history of the Museu de l'Empordà dates back to 1885, when the first collections from the Museu del Prado arrived. The Museu de l'Electricitat de Figueres houses hundreds of objects and documents of cultural and historical value that illustrate the arrival and development of electricity in the region.

History

The Església de Sant Pere de Figueres has been documented since 1020. It forms the historic core around which the city’s medieval centre developed. The church is predominantly Gothic; an extensive reconstruction in the 14th century shaped the single-nave building with rib vaults that survives today. The Museu del Joguet de Catalunya displays games and toys from around the world across three floors. Its collections include industrial games and toys dating from the late 19th century to the present day.

Experiences

Castell de Sant Ferran is the largest 18th-century fortress in Europe. A guidebook, audio files and a map with 14 stops are available for the self-guided visit. The “Cathedral of Water” experience takes visitors by jeep through the moats, by inflatable boat into an underground cistern and through underground tunnels. The historic-centre route leads to eleven emblematic sites associated with Figueres’s identity and with significant events and figures from the city’s history.

Food and Drink

The Figueres fruit and vegetable market takes place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The gastronomic route focuses on tasting local and seasonal produce from the Figueres fruit and vegetable market. It includes a seasonal rice dish at Can Jeroni, paired with a white wine made from native grape varieties.

Getting Around

Figueres’s conventional railway station is located in the city centre and is served by regional trains with connections to large parts of Catalonia. Figueres high-speed railway station connects the city with Barcelona, Madrid and Paris, as well as several French cities. A shuttle bus provides a connection to the city centre. The Figueres–Roses cycling route is part of the cycleway network connecting Figueres with Alt Empordà and beyond.
