Vilamacolum: Literary Route, Beaches and Museums

Vilamacolum combines a literary route with museums, the ancient site of Ruïnes d'Empúries and beaches in the surrounding area. The Vilamacolum literary route is 4 km long in total and has an elevation difference of 4%.

Literary Route

The route runs through seven points. Five stations are located in the town centre, while two others are outside the town centre on agricultural land. There is a reading at every point along the literary route.

The Vilamacolum literary route is suitable for all target groups. As a guided activity, it is scheduled at different times depending on the season. In summer, the tour takes place on Saturdays from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. In winter, the Saturday slot is from 3 to 5 p.m.; on Sundays, the time slot from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. remains unchanged.

The four kilometres of the route are divided between the town centre and the agricultural land outside the town centre. As a result, both the seven points and the respective readings form a route that incorporates different areas of Vilamacolum. For the guided version, different Saturday times are available at the weekend depending on the season, while the Sunday appointment is between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. in both periods.

Another route is called “Itinerario saludable Vilamacolum corto”. Its starting point is at the intersection of Santa Maria and Sant Pere streets.

Culture and History

The local culture includes the Festa Major of Vilamacolum. A local youth committee organises it every year. The ancient site of Ruïnes d'Empúries is also located in the surrounding area of Vilamacolum. The Ruïnes d'Empúries Museum is likewise located nearby.

Other museums in the surrounding area of Vilamacolum include the Museu de la Tècnica de l'Empordà and the Museum Museu de L'Electricitat. The Butterfly Park Empuriabrava zoo is also located nearby.
