Bordils: River Landscape, Culture and Trails

The Riu Ter forms the northern boundary of Bordils. Bordils is closely connected to the river and the surrounding agricultural landscape. On the banks of the Riu Ter, Ban de Bordils preserves emblematic poplar plantations.

Nature

The Séquia Vinyals irrigation area covers approximately 804 ha. Of this, 224 ha are irrigated in Celrà, 305 ha in Bordils, 90 ha in Sant Joan de Mollet, 75 ha in Flaçà and 110 ha in Juià. The plain includes fruit trees, cereals, vegetable crops, poplars and plane trees, as well as internationally recognised nurseries for garden and ornamental plants.

The Séquia Vinyals is a historic waterworks and irrigation system. It uses public waters from the Riu Ter at Campdorà and comprises a diversion weir, a main channel, secondary channels, sluice gates, pipelines, lifting facilities and other technical installations. Its components therefore range from water conveyance through channels and sluice gates to the technical installations mentioned above.

Culture

The church of Sant Esteve de Bordils was built in the second half of the 16th century in the Late Gothic style, with Renaissance details. Its construction history thus combines Late Gothic forms with Renaissance elements.

It has an octagonal bell tower with pointed-arch openings, gargoyles and balustrades, as well as an ornate façade and a decorated portal. On the west façade, above the entrance, there is a large rose window made up of 25 panels.

The washhouse on Carrer Almeda is one of two public, municipally owned washhouses in Bordils and was last restored in 2007. A walking tour of the work of the artist Leo Alejo is planned in Bordils.

Three sardanas are dedicated to Bordils. The Bordils Audio Archive is a collaborative audio archive that collects memories relating to places in the town in audio form.

Trails

The 8.5 km “Ruta dels arbres monumentals” route takes walkers through the green spaces and paths of Bordils to 12 emblematic trees in the municipality. The 14 km, easy cycling route “De Girona a Bordils (per la passarel·la de Celrà)” starts in Girona, follows the course of the Riu Ter to the church of Sant Esteve de Bordils and crosses the Ter pedestrian footbridge at Celrà.

The two routes have different spatial focuses: the 8.5 kilometres of the tree route remain within the green spaces and paths of Bordils, while the 14 kilometres of the easy cycling route run from Girona along the Riu Ter to the church and include the Ter pedestrian footbridge at Celrà. This places a walk within the municipality alongside a longer connection between Girona and Bordils.

Geographical Setting

Bordils is connected to the Barcelona–Portbou railway line.
