La Pera: Medieval Streets and Churches
La Pera preserves a medieval town layout with narrow, steep streets, some of which are covered by vaults. At the foot of the hill, distinctive rock formations are clearly visible.
Culture and History
Many houses in La Pera preserve decorated roof eaves and other historic architectural elements dating from the 15th to the 19th century. The parish church of Sant Isidor de la Pera stands at the highest point of the town center. It was built from the late 16th century over the course of the 17th century in the Gothic-Renaissance style. Its tower features Gothic tracery arcades and carved gargoyles. The remains of La Pera’s fortress, documented in 1273, include a large fragment of the fortification wall.
Festivals and Traditions
La Pera’s Festa Major was scheduled to take place over three festival days from June 13 to 15 in 2025 and from May 29 to 31 in 2026. The 2026 Festa Major includes a mass accompanied by a cobla, two sardanas in the square, and a closing concert and dance evening with the Orquestra Selvatana. The traditional Cargolada de La Pera is a communal snail meal featuring dried snails served with aioli and tomato sauce.
Places to Visit
The nearby Púbol lies 1 km south of La Pera on the right bank of the Riera de Púbol stream. The nearby Sant Pere church in Púbol is a Gothic building erected next to the castle between 1327 and 1341. The interior tour of the nearby Castell Gala Dalí is freely accessible and follows a one-way route from Room 1 to Room 10. There is currently no public transport connection from the town center to the nearby Castell Gala Dalí in Púbol. Flaçà railway station is 5 km from Púbol; a taxi can be taken to the castle from there.
The Romanesque wall paintings from Sant Andreu de Pedrinyà are kept at the Museu d’Art de Girona and date from the 12th century or the beginning of the 13th century. The wall painting from Pedrinyà is considered the best-preserved example of Romanesque painting in Baix Empordà. In Pedrinyà, a festival in honor of Saint Andrew is celebrated on the last Sunday in November.
Nature and Landscape
Riuràs forms a compact settlement of farmhouses on a terrace on the slopes of Les Gavarres, surrounded by pine and holm oak forests. Can Negre in Riuràs is an 18th-century farmhouse with floral decorations in triangles on the door lintels. To the west of Riuràs stands the small 17th-century chapel of Sant Rafael. Pine and holm oak forests characteristic of Les Gavarres grow in the western and northwestern parts of the municipality of La Pera. Remains of volcanic activity can be found in La Pera.
Cycling
The La Pera–Corçà–Monells–Madremanya cycling loop starts at La Pera Town Hall. It is signposted with red route markers for navigation. The route connects agricultural fields with wooded landscapes.
