Riumors is located in the Empordà plain, directly next to the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park. The village combines surroundings shaped by fields and rural paths with a long ecclesiastical history and regular annual events.
Natural Environment of the Empordà Plain
Riumors is surrounded by farmland and rural paths and has great biodiversity. This combination of open landscape and village surroundings defines the character of Riumors: fields and rural paths give the area around the village its tangible character, while the proximity to the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park extends the landscape beyond the village.
In the wider region around Riumors lies the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà, one of Catalonia’s most important wetlands. It is located between the mouths of the Fluvià and Muga rivers. The Aiguamolls complement the fields and paths of Riumors with a regional wetland area between the mouths of the Fluvià and Muga.
History Reflected in the Village
The landscape around Riumors also bears historical traces. The former ponds of Riumors were drained in the 18th century. The fertile land was then divided between the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes and the Lord of Xamunar, the Marqués de Riumors. The former waterscape and the agricultural character of the surrounding area that remains today are thus part of an understandable historical context.
The history of the Sant Mamet church in Riumors is particularly multilayered. It already existed in 1019. It was probably reconstructed in the first half of the 12th century; a consecration is documented for 1150. The present Sant Mamet church is a 15th- or 16th-century building that was later remodeled several times in the 18th and 19th centuries. The church was also renovated and fortified at a later date. At Sant Mamet, the early mention from 1019, the presumed reconstruction and the consecration in 1150 all predate the later alterations.
Routes, Festivals and Regional Orientation
Riumors has traditional stone houses and paved streets. At the same time, the village is a starting point for hiking and cycling routes with panoramic views of the surrounding nature, with the Serra de l’Albera forming the backdrop. The routes start in Riumors, while the local road connects the two roads.
A local road connects the C-260 between Figueres and Roses with the C-31 between Figueres and La Bisbal d’Empordà. Figueres is the common geographical reference point in both connections. There are also two regular annual festival dates: the festival of Sant Isidre is celebrated in May, while the festivities of Sant Mamet take place every year on 17 and 18 August. The two August days dedicated to Sant Mamet follow one another directly.
For further destinations in the surrounding area, you can also include Caldes De Malavella, Cadaqués, Alp, Planoles, Campdevànol, Sant Jaume De Llierca, Vilafant and Tortellá in your travel plans.
