Alp – Culture, Winter Sports and Mountain Panorama
Culture
The Església de Sant Pere d’Alp is an 11th-century church. It is the only Romanesque building in the comarca. Its floor plan is basilical and has three naves. A Gothic painting from the 14th century is located on the north wall of the presbytery. It depicts Sant Cristòfol.
The church thus combines a Romanesque structure with a Gothic artwork created at a later date. The basilical, three-nave floor plan defines the spatial arrangement, while the painting on the north wall of the presbytery adds a distinct historical accent. Both elements belong to the same sacred building and make different periods directly discernible in the structure.
The Torre de Riu includes the small Capella de la Divina Pastora. The chapel is attached to the main building. The Torre de Riu itself is a castle with a Romantic character. It was built in 1896 on the site of the old Torre del Riu. This old Torre del Riu was a 14th-century defensive bastion.
The Torre de Riu therefore brings together the 1896 castle, the older defensive bastion and the attached chapel in a shared architectural history. The Capella de la Divina Pastora is explicitly described as a small space attached to the main building. The older Torre del Riu forms the historical foundation of the later castle.
The Font de la Mare de Déu de la Guia is located in the old town of Alp. On Font Square, it forms an architectural ensemble. This ensemble includes a Marian image, a public washhouse and a livestock watering trough.
The Dolmen de Paborda is a megalithic tomb. It was built approximately between 2000 and 1800 BC.
With its church, castle, fountain and megalithic tomb, Alp’s documented cultural history extends from prehistory to the 20th century. The individual sites preserve different forms: sacred architecture, a historic defensive feature, an ensemble of public everyday life and a prehistoric tomb.
