Castell-Platja d’Aro combines cultural heritage, nature observation and activities by the water. The old town of Castell d’Aro was officially recognised as a cultural asset of national interest in 1995. More than 250 bird species live in Parc dels Estanys or stop there during migration. The park is an ornithological protected area and has two observation points as well as another viewpoint overlooking Vall d’Aro. A permanent open-air sculpture exhibition adds a cultural aspect to the natural setting.

Culture and history

The Municipal Art Fund is housed in Benedormiens Castle. The Mercat Medieval de Castell d’Aro programme includes craft workshops, period performances and demonstrations of traditional crafts. The Pessebre Vivent takes place in the old town and in Vall de la Coma of Castell d’Aro. For events, current dates and times should be checked before travelling, as the programme is tied to specific event days.

Coastal paths

The Camí de Ronda from S'agaró begins at Sant Pol beach and ends at Cala Sa Conca. The route has a section that is accessible to people with reduced mobility. The beach, cove and accessible section belong to the same route. Current route conditions are important when using paths and should be checked before travelling.

Cycling and exercise

Castell-Platja d’Aro has a large skate park. The La Vall d’Aro mountain-bike route is 8.8 kilometres long, has a cumulative elevation gain of 29 metres and partly follows the former route of the Carrilet railway line. The Baix Empordà BTT Centre has a facility in Castell d’Aro where users can receive information and support services. The specific route length and elevation gain describe the route, while the section along the former railway line provides a historical connection.

Water and maritime activities

Club Nàutic Port d’Aro offers a sailing school. Kayak hire and kayak excursions are available at the main beaches of Platja d’Aro in summer. Several diving companies in Castell d’Aro, Platja d’Aro and S'Agaró offer courses and excursions all year round. The services vary according to activity and period: sailing lessons, summer kayaking, and diving courses and excursions available year-round each represent distinct maritime focuses.

Cuisine of Empordà

The typical cuisine of Empordà is considered a cuisine of sea and mountains. Seafood is combined with vegetables and mountain products such as meat and cheese. The combination of ingredients from the water, the garden and the mountains shapes this culinary theme.
