Canet d’Adri: Volcanic Cones, Gorges and Romanesque Churches

83 percent of Canet d’Adri’s area is covered by forests. Holm oaks, cork oaks, oaks and pine trees grow in these forests. Puig d’Adri is a wooded volcanic cone standing 408 metres high. This volcanic cone rises above the surrounding land, fields, farmhouses and woodland. At 985 metres, Puigsou is the highest point in the municipality of Canet d’Adri.

The tree species mentioned shape the extensive forest cover, just as the distinctive elevations shape the landscape. Puig d’Adri and Puigsou are two points within the municipality that differ in elevation. The surrounding fields, farmhouses and woodland also explicitly belong to the area above which the volcanic cone rises.

Nature

Parc de la Font de la Torre is located beside the deep volcanic gorges of the Riera de Canet. The gorges feature rock overhangs, small waterfalls and pools. The Camí antic de Canet a Adri is a restored path. It connects the villages of Canet and Adri.

This means that the Riera de Canet is characterised not only by the gorges themselves, but also by their individual features, including rock overhangs, waterfalls and pools. The Camí antic de Canet a Adri adds an explicitly restored connection between the two villages to this landscape.

History

Sant Vicenç de Canet was first mentioned as early as 822. Sant Vicenç de Canet is a basilica church with three naves. These three naves end in three semicircular apses. The parish church of Biert already existed in the 10th century. It was rebuilt at the beginning of the 11th century, before undergoing another reconstruction in the 12th century.

The parish church of Montcal was mentioned in 1057. The present building is originally a Romanesque structure from the 12th century. Later extensions also form part of the present building. The Dolmen de la Mota is a megalithic funerary monument. It was erected in the Late Neolithic period between 2500 and 2200 BC. The dolmen was used as a burial site throughout the Bronze Age; this use continued until the 8th century BC.

Architectural Heritage

The Romanesque façades of Sant Llorenç d’Adri are completely preserved. They are integrated into the present building. The Romanesque west portal of Sant Llorenç d’Adri has three stepped archivolts. On each side there is a group consisting of a base, column and capital.

The architectural elements of the portal are clearly structured: the three archivolts are stepped, while on each side a base, column and capital form a group. The preserved façades are also part of the present building and do not stand beside it as independent architectural elements.

Festivals and Cuisine

The Festa Remença takes place every year. Its venue alternates between the villages of the Vall de Llémena. The programme includes traditional dances, talks on history, a theatrical performance and medieval cuisine. Canet d’Adri has numerous restaurants offering homemade cuisine.

The festival thus combines a stage programme, talks, dancing and medieval cuisine in an annual event. The alternating venue remains limited to the villages of the Vall de Llémena, while numerous restaurants in Canet d’Adri offer homemade cuisine.
