Esponellà: Castle, Fluvià and Trails
El Castell d’Esponellà is a castle whose origins date back to the 11th century. The building stands west of the town centre on a 196-metre-high hill; from this point, there is a wide view over the village and the Fluvià River. The location thus combines the historic site with the described view over the town and the river valley.
History and Culture
The Església de Sant Cebrià d’Esponellà has Romanesque origins. In the 15th and 16th centuries, it was altered with elements in the Gothic style. Two 14th-century sculptures of the Madonna are kept in the Església de Sant Cebrià d’Esponellà. One of the two sculptures is made of wood, while the other is made of alabaster. The church thus preserves both its Romanesque origins and the later Gothic elements, as well as the two different materials of the Madonna figures.
At the Festa Major d'Esponellà, a mass is celebrated during which the Goigs are sung in honour of the patron saint, Sant Cebrià. The third Sunday in September is given as the date for the Festa Major d'Esponellà. The feast day brings together the mass, the singing of the Goigs and the patronal feast of Sant Cebrià in an explicitly mentioned local tradition.
Geographical Setting
The Pont d’Esponellà bridge was 156 metres long, 4 metres wide and 17 metres high above the riverbed. Its three recorded measurements describe the structure in terms of length, width and height, with the height explicitly referring to the riverbed.
The Salt de Martís overcomes more than 100 metres of elevation difference from Martís de Baix towards the Fluvià and forms two waterfalls in the process. The described route therefore extends from Martís de Baix in the direction of the Fluvià; the elevation difference and the two waterfalls belong to the same information about this location.
Nature
The “Ruta cap a la Central” is a route that is not laid out as a circular trail. From Esponellà via La Central to Serinyà, it measures 6.60 kilometres. The route runs along the Fluvià River and over a Greenway. Its course is thus defined by the three named places, the route length, the river and the Greenway.
Esponellà’s tourist route programme offers geolocated routes with QR codes. The routes are intended to help visitors discover the municipality’s natural and cultural surroundings. The “Camí Quico Sabater” follows the route taken through the municipality of Esponellà by an anti-Franco guerrilla fighter on New Year’s Eve in 1959. The name of the trail is thus connected with a specific historical route and the stated date.
