Culture and History

Sant Pere d'Albanyà was founded around the year 820 and, under Carolingian rule, is considered one of the earliest documented monasteries south of the Pyrenees. At the E.P. Museu Albert Molins, Albanyà's development over time can be traced through panels and objects; traditional crafts from the comarca are also showcased there. An older testimony is the Cista del Coll de la Creu del Principi. It lies at 1,020 metres above sea level on the northern slope of Monte de Bassegoda and is a tomb dated, based on its architecture, to the Middle Neolithic period from 3,500 to 2,700 BC.

Hiking and Cycling

For active days, the Albanyà–Lliurona–Bassegoda–Albanyà route offers several specific points of reference. It is signposted for mountain biking, Itinerannia and the Camino Muga, and passes within 2 km of the 12th-century Romanesque hermitage of Sant Martí de Corsavell. From La Parada, the path leads up a steep ascent to Cuello de la Creu, where it offers sea views. The Lliurona des d'Albanyà hike begins at Pont de la Boixeda behind the town of Albanyà and is also signposted. The mountain-biking centre in Albanyà is connected to the mountain-biking routes associated with it; from here, you can set off directly onto these routes.

Forests, River and Mountain Landscape

The landscape around Albanyà extends from stretches of river up to the heights of Monte de Bassegoda. The Muga rises within the municipality of Albanyà; there are numerous gorges along its course. The Gorgas de Albanyà are located in the Muga's first sections and within the PEIN of Alta Garrotxa. A well-preserved riparian forest of alders, ash trees, poplars and elms grows along the Riera d’en Parada, supporting a great diversity of fauna and flora. On the slopes of Monte de Bassegoda there are holm-oak, oak, beech and riparian forests. At 1,373 metres, Monte de Bassegoda is the highest mountain in the comarca and can be reached from Albanyà.

The Albanyà Astronomical Observatory offers theoretical courses and nighttime observations with modern telescopes. For the astronomical baptism experience, the meeting point is the entrance to the Albanyà Astronomical Observatory; the event lasts 90 minutes. Fruits Vermells d'Albanyà offers a completely different way to experience the regional landscape: raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and redcurrants are grown there, and customers can pick berries themselves for immediate fresh consumption.
