Urús: Mountain Landscape, Hiking Trails and Romanesque Culture

Mountain Landscape and Hiking Trails

Urús is predominantly characterised by mountainous and wooded terrain. Almost the entire wooded area consists of black pines. Access to Urús is via a turn-off from the GIV-4036 off the road to the Cadí Tunnel.

The Cortal d’en Vidal and Font Llebrera route begins at Plaça Major in Urús. It is a challenging, 12.5-kilometre circular hiking trail. The starting point in the village and the return as a circular route make the route geographically unambiguous. From Font Llebrera, the Coll-de-Jou route can lead back to Urús as a circular route. Its course follows the path to the Cortal d’en Vidal mountain refuge. Thus, both the section at Font Llebrera and the path to the mountain refuge form part of the circular route described. The different route lengths of 12.5 and 17.3 kilometres, together with the classification as “challenging”, provide objective planning details for hiking in Urús.

Passes and Peaks

Coll de Jou is one of the most important northern passes in Cerdanya. Traditionally, it was used by carters and pedestrians. Its documented use by different groups of travellers is therefore part of the historical classification of the pass.

At 2,536 metres, Tosa d’Alp offers a viewpoint over the eastern Pyrenees. The ascent route from Urús to Tosa d’Alp is a 17.3-kilometre out-and-back route. Tosa d’Alp is also known as Pedró dels Quatre Batlles. In its description, the named route connects the starting point in Urús with the summit and the complete return route.

Romanesque Architecture and History

The Ermita de Sant Grau follows the architectural conventions of the Romanesque period. Its apse faces east. The orientation of the apse is therefore a specific feature of the Romanesque design. The base of an old medieval watchtower has been preserved near the Ermita de Sant Grau. The area surrounding the chapel thus includes both a Romanesque architectural feature and a preserved part of a medieval fortification.
