Culture and History

In Campelles stands the Torre de Campelles, a medieval fortified tower. It has been documented since the 11th century. Archaeological investigations have been carried out at the Torre de Campelles. They identified construction and use phases from the 14th to the 19th century.

The Església de Sant Martí de Campelles was founded about 1,000 years ago. From the 13th century onward, the Església de Sant Martí de Campelles was fortified. Around the year 1000, it was a Romanesque building. This building had a single altar, a tower and a bell tower. French troops caused a fire during the Guerra Gran (1793–1795). After this fire, the Església de Sant Martí de Campelles was rebuilt. It was rededicated in 1799.

The Capella de Sant Bartomeu del Baell stands at El Baell in Campelles. The church covers 40 square metres and was built in 1772. The Torre de Campelles has been restored. The tower can be climbed via a ramp.

Nature and Altitudes

Les Coves de Ribes are deep natural cavities. They lie in a narrow gorge that opens into the Vall de Ribes. From Campelles, there is a view over practically the entire Vall de Ribes.

The Refugi de Pla de Prats is an unstaffed mountain refuge. It lies in the forest of Campelles. The refuge is situated at an altitude of 1,559 metres. The Refugi de la Covil is an unstaffed mountain refuge. It lies at the foot of Mount Covil. Its elevation is 1,770 metres. Thus, the surroundings of Campelles are described as including both a forest location and the foot of Mount Covil, each with its own elevation.

Trails and Viewpoints

The De Campelles a Sant Antoni i els miradors de Ribes route leads to the Ermita de Sant Antoni. There are two viewpoints along the route, offering views over the Vall de Ribes. The Campelles-la Covil-Campelles route passes through the shaded section of the Montgrony mountain range. At the refuge in the Pla de Prats meadow, this route includes a recreational area for resting. Thus, the routes described connect a chapel, viewpoints, a shaded section of a mountain range and the refuge near Pla de Prats.

Festivals

The Festa Major de Campelles takes place at Pentecost. The Festa de Sant Martí is Campelles’ small local festival. This festival includes a ceremonial address and the ringing of bells. A botifarra competition, activities for children and other leisure activities are also part of it. The festival also includes a communal dinner, dancing and a solemn mass.
