Capmany among Vineyards, Megaliths and Village History

Capmany’s landscape alternates between vineyards, centuries-old olive trees and Mediterranean forests of cork oaks, pines and holm oaks.

Nature and Trails

The Ruta Megalítica follows a circular route through the cork oak forests. The official village trail is approximately 220 metres long, takes about five minutes at a leisurely pace and is almost entirely flat. Circular routes are distinguished for planning purposes mainly by their length, course and terrain; current trail conditions and local guidance should be checked before setting out.

Faith and Village History

The Capella de Sant Sebastià is a religious building dedicated to Saint Sebastian. He is regarded as the patron saint against epidemics. The village also features the parish church of Santa Àgata in Capmany, a fortified Romanesque church dating from the 12th and 13th centuries.

Of Capmany’s medieval walls, a rectangular tower approximately 15 metres high survives at the northeastern corner. The structure is therefore one of the visible remnants of the former fortifications.

Wine and Festivals

The Festa del Ranxo is a celebration open to everyone’s participation. A communal dish is cooked in copper cauldrons and shared. The Festa Major de Capmany, held in honour of Saint Àgata, combines religious celebrations, traditional activities, performances and dancing. Event dates and start times are part of planning for festivals, as religious celebrations, performances and communal cooking are tied to specific times; current dates should be checked before travelling.

Vi-Vent is a wine interpretation centre in one of the three halls of the El Parral building in Capmany. During a visit to Vi-Vent, visitors can see agricultural implements, various farming machines and historical photographs of the Sindicat El Parral. At the Agrobodega El Parral, a tasting of five wines from different areas of the Empordà is offered, accompanied by a selection of cured meats or cheese. At wine interpretation centres and museums, current opening hours should be checked before visiting; for tastings, the applicable visiting hours may also be relevant. The combination of an exhibition and a tasting distinguishes the two offerings according to their respective visit formats.

The cultural profile of winegrowing also includes the Museu de les Aixetes. It houses almost 5,000 taps from major wine-producing countries such as France, Germany, Italy, Austria and Spain.

Megalithic Heritage

The Dolmen del Quer Afumat is one of the archaeological attractions on Capmany’s official megalithic circular route. It lies approximately two kilometres north of Capmany and has a rectangular chamber and a very massive capstone.

Near Quer Afumat there is a massive granite outcrop known as Pedra dels Sacrificis. Its incised carvings on the upper surface are characteristic of megalithic culture.
