Culture and History

Vilaür's medieval old town has a gateway at its entrance. The entrance gateway forms a short passage through the lower part of a tower. This passage is covered by a barrel vault.

Can Puig is a manor house. It dates from the 18th century and has preserved all of its outbuildings.

The church of Sant Esteve de Vilaür dates back to the 10th and 11th centuries. Its present appearance corresponds to a Romanesque building from the 12th and 13th centuries. This building was extensively remodelled in the late Middle Ages and in later centuries. Around the 15th and 16th centuries, Sant Esteve de Vilaür was fortified with a structure built above the original church building. This structure nearly doubled the height of the building.

Sant Esteve thus preserves an early origin, the Romanesque construction phase, later alterations and the medieval fortification as distinct historical layers.

Landscape and Surroundings

Vilaür lies on the edge of the Plana d'Empordà. Here, the village offers a mosaic landscape of agricultural land and pine forests.

Ruïnes d'Empúries, a museum, is located in the surroundings of Vilaür. Ruïnes d'Empúries is also an ancient site there. Platja de la Devesa is located in the surroundings of Vilaür and is a beach. Platja del Portitxol is also located there and is a beach. Platja del Rec del Molí, a beach, is also in the surroundings. Platja de la Gola is likewise located in the surroundings of Vilaür and is a beach.

The surroundings mentioned therefore include cultural attractions and museums as well as an ancient site and several beaches; the respective places remain named as independent destinations.

Trails and Routes

Vilaür has an extensive network of roads and trails. Routes can be organised on these roads and trails for walking, cycling and horseback riding.

The Vilaür–Saus hiking route takes one hour. The route “Ruta 149. Camallera, Saus, Vilaür i Llampaies” takes approximately 2.45 hours for an experienced walker without breaks.

The two routes mentioned therefore have different time indications: one hour is given for Vilaür–Saus, while the longer route is specified as taking approximately 2.45 hours without breaks.

For Ruta 149, the time indication explicitly applies to an experienced walker and is calculated without breaks; the route name includes Camallera, Saus, Vilaür and Llampaies.

From the AP-7, take Exit 5. Then drive along the GI-623 towards l’Escala. After approximately 23 kilometres, turn onto the GI-6231 towards Vilaür.
