Nature Along the River

The Camí Natural de la Muga follows the course of the Muga River and passes through different river habitats. Along the route, riparian woodland alternates with floodplains. Over a length of approximately 40 kilometres, the path runs through the municipality of Pont de Molins. The landscape therefore extends from the vegetated riverbanks to the open areas of the floodplains. The changing habitats accompany the course of the path and give it its natural character. The river, vegetation along the banks, and open floodplain areas shape the sequence of landscapes along the route.

Activities such as fishing, cycle touring, and hiking are possible along the Camí Natural de la Muga. The route can be covered on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback. An approximate route length can serve as a timeframe when planning a day section. The choice between walking, cycling, and horseback riding concerns the practical way of undertaking the respective section. The kilometre figure describes the spatial framework, while the means of transport determines how the journey is undertaken.

History and Architectural Heritage

Molins Castle dates from 1125 and served a defensive function between the rival counties of Empúries and Besalú. Today, the site is a ruin surrounded by woodland. The vegetation makes it more difficult to visit and is also part of the castle's present-day appearance. The site thus brings together its medieval defensive function and its current character as a vegetation-covered ruin.

The Canònica de Santa Maria del Roure is located northwest of Pont de Molins in Alt Empordà. The former monastery and sanctuary is believed to date from the 11th or early 12th century. Its monastic function, sanctuary character, and presumed dating place the building within the historic cultural landscape.

The Sant Sebastià church stands in the centre of Molins. The rectangular place of worship has a single nave, side chapels, and a semicircular apse. The church was completed in 1789; this year is inscribed on the lintel. The year is affixed directly to the building, while its basic form is defined by the single nave, side chapels, and apse. At historic sites, the date of construction and the architectural form can highlight different aspects of a visit. A year inscribed on the lintel can be read directly on the building when viewing the church.

The La Closa and La Roca mills are located immediately one after the other and used the same water. One of them is therefore situated at a lower level. Both sites probably have medieval origins, remained in operation well into the 18th century, and were remodelled. The watercourse, elevation, and history of use are closely connected at both mills.

The lime kilns were traditionally built from stone and clay. Wood was burned inside to produce lime. Stone and clay formed the kiln, wood served as fuel, and lime was produced as a result of the firing process.
