Culture and History

The place name Pujals dels Pagesos is recorded in older documents under the name Podialis Rusticorum. Pujals dels Pagesos began as a hamlet; farmers lived there who were dependent on the lords of Pujals dels Cavallers. During work on the church in 1982, a Romanesque Christ in Majesty was discovered.

The church of Santa Maria de Pujals dels Pagesos preserves a Gothic limestone baptismal font. It has a single-nave layout, a semicircular apse and a roof with a pointed barrel vault. A small ossuary in the church is dated to 1333. It contains the mortal remains of G. Pere Palol and Guillem de Cornellà. The church also preserves a silver processional cross from the 16th century.

The Camí de Mas Batllori is 599 metres long. It runs from the Camí de Sords a Pujals dels Pagesos to the old Camí Vell de Palol de Farga. The Camí de Can Sentric begins behind the church of Pujals dels Pagesos and runs eastwards between fields to the Bosc d’en Sentric, before continuing to the road. The Camí de Can Ferró connects the old road from Palol de Farga directly with Pujals dels Pagesos; it is 522 metres long.

One road named for exploring the Terraprim d’Empordà landscape runs from Banyoles to Sant Esteve de Guialbes via Pujals dels Pagesos and on to Vilademuls. Access roads to the Terraprim d’Empordà landscape also include roads leading to Pujals dels Pagesos.

In the immediate surroundings of Pujals dels Pagesos lies the old hamlet of Palol de Farga, with a group of centuries-old houses of notable interest. In the immediate surroundings of Pujals dels Pagesos, by the Farga stream, there is an ice house with a diameter of 7 metres. This ice house is considered the second-largest ice house in the comarca after the ice house of Palol de Revardit. The windows of Can Deri in the immediate surroundings of Pujals dels Pagesos are Gothic-Renaissance in style and date from the 14th to the 16th century.
