Camós – Churches, Nature and Historic Paths

Since 2020, Vilauba in Camós has been classified as a Cultural Asset of National Interest (BCIN). The restored archaeological site is prepared for visitors with a signposted circular route and explanatory panels.

Culture

On the southern side of the Church of Santa Maria de Camós, original elements of the Romanesque building have been preserved, including carefully worked sandstone blocks and a double-splayed window with a semicircular arch made of small wedge-shaped stones.

During paving work in the square of the Church of Santa Maria de Camós in 2017, a fragment of the Romanesque apse, contemporary burials, and a structure with the rectangular ground plan of an older building were uncovered.

Santa Magdalena de Noves is a single-nave Romanesque church from the late 11th century. The surviving altarpiece dates from the 16th century, is painted in oil on polychromed walnut, and consists of sixteen sections. The building and furnishing details at Santa Magdalena de Noves also reveal the time gap between the construction of the church and the later altarpiece.

The rectory next to the Church of Sant Vicenç de Camós is a fortified farmhouse dating from the 13th century. Its tower preserves two twin windows with semicircular-arched arcades.

Nature

The Salt Dalmau waterfall on the Matamors River is already mentioned in 1017.

Its surroundings include a spring, a shimmering blue-green pool, and notable specimens of oaks, holm oaks, plane trees, riparian vegetation, and elder trees.

The rock immediately beside the Salt Dalmau waterfall consists of travertine. It is connected with ancient lacustrine deposits from springs on the Matamors River and the same groundwater system as Lake Banyoles.

Restored sections of the Matamors stream feature riparian woodland and animal species typical of these habitats.

The elevated location of the Church of Santa Maria de Camós offers views towards Banyoles and across the surrounding plain.

Paths and Festivals

The Camí de les Esglésies de Camós connects the municipality’s two churches, Santa Maria and Sant Vicenç.

The route follows shaded roads and paths and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.

The “Ruta camí de tornada a l’escola” follows the route that children from Corts took to school in Camós in the 1950s.

It runs almost parallel to the river and leads from Gorga Blava to Salt Dalmau.

The Aplec de Santa Magdalena takes place on the third Saturday in July at the Santa Magdalena hermitage.

The Festa del Roser, Camós’s main festival, takes place on the fourth weekend of May and is jointly celebrated by the two parishes.
