Discover Sant Gregori: Nature, History and Trails

Those who explore Sant Gregori will encounter river landscapes along the banks of its rivers and streams. In the less level areas, pine, holm oak, oak and cork oak forests predominate. The flatter areas are mainly occupied by agricultural fields, especially grain-growing and forage-crop areas.

Culture and History

The Sant Grau chapel has been documented since 1548. Evidence of an Iberian settlement dating from the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC was found at the summit of Sant Grau. The chapel and the archaeological evidence therefore belong to different historical periods of the same site. In the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, the Casal dels Margarit was the manor house of the influential Margarit family. The square building has three floors arranged around an inner courtyard. At one corner there is a fortified square corner tower comprising four storeys. Its former function as a manor house and its preserved architectural layout thus represent two distinguishable aspects of the same historic building.

The Santa Afra sanctuary was built in 1760 on the site of an earlier oratory. Santa Afra is an important pilgrimage site and a place of religious gatherings. The panoramic view over the lower Vall de Llémena is also part of this site. Castell de Tudela includes the remains of the keep. Nearby walls are also among the preserved remains of the complex. Thus, Santa Afra records both its earlier building history and its present-day religious significance, as well as the view over the lower Vall de Llémena.

Festivals and Local Products

Since 2006, the Fira del Pa i de la Xocolata has taken place every year in November. Its fixed date in November makes it easier for you to place the festival within the annual calendar. At the fair, chocolate, bread and products made from them are sold. These products are also sampled there. The event name and its offerings explicitly refer to bread and chocolate as the festival’s two defining product groups.

Getting There and Trails

Bus route 301 passes through Sant Gregori. It runs from Girona to Sant Esteve de Llémena. Sant Gregori is therefore included in the route between Girona and Sant Esteve de Llémena.

Route 1 is called Les fonts naturals de Sant Gregori and is designed as a circular route. Its route is 12 km long. It starts at the Centre BTT de Sant Gregori, and the end of the circuit is also there. The starting and finishing point is therefore the same named starting point of the route. The route length and the identical start and end point directly describe the extent and shape of this route.

Sant Grau can be reached via a forest road. Access is possible on foot or by off-road vehicle.
