Riells i Viabrea: Nature and Cultural Heritage

Nature

60% of the municipality of Riells i Viabrea belongs to the Parc Natural del Montseny and its surrounding area. The Montseny Massif was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978. At 1,307 metres, Turó de Morou is the highest point in Riells i Viabrea.

Culture and History

The Ermita de Sant Llop stands on the 246-metre-high Turó de Sant Llop. It is surrounded by the Riells and Sant Llop streams and is a small Romanesque church. Its main portal dates from 1606.

The Església de Sant Martí de Riells del Montseny is a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century.

The Torre d’en Pega, also known as castell de Riells, was a smaller fortress belonging to Castell de Montsoriu. As a medieval building, it stands beside the fields of Mas Can Pega on the edge of the municipality.

The Torre de Montfort was built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries. It was a medieval watchtower dependent on Castell de Montsoriu. At an altitude of 734 metres, the Torre de Montfort offers views over the valley of Riells del Montseny and the upper part of Arbúcies.

The Creu Monumental is included in the Inventory of Catalonia’s Architectural Heritage.

Trails and Getting There

The signposted PR-C 201 route to Castell de Montsoriu begins at Riells-Viabrea railway station and ends at Castell de Montsoriu. It passes through Riells i Viabrea and Breda, as well as through cork oak groves and scrubland.

For travelling to the Parc Natural del Montseny by train, a RENFE railway station is listed in Riells i Viabrea.

The Vía Verde Breda–Viabrea is a 2.27-kilometre route between Breda and Riells i Viabrea, completely separated from motorised traffic and intended for walks and cycling trips. It is directly connected to Viabrea-Breda station, which belongs to Rodalies de Catalunya’s R2 line.

Events

The Marxa del Llop is a sporting event organised by Club Riells i Viabrea. The 2026 Marxa del Llop began and ended at the Poliesportiu Municipal de Riells i Viabrea. In the Parc Natural del Montseny, it included 15- and 24-kilometre routes.

Ecovita 2026 was the 9th Fira del Medi Ambient i la Sostenibilitat del Montseny and took place with free admission at Plaça de la Vila in Riells i Viabrea.

Ecovita 2026 included a scientific bird-ringing session at the Riera de Sant Llop as an observation and environmental education activity.

Ecovita 2026 also included a presentation and a guided tour of Casa Ecològica de Can Llop, with transport available if required.
