Old Town and Romanesque heritage

Madremanya combines an Old Town with paths through the Gavarres landscape and several cultural and historical attractions. A walk through the historic centre, a route through forests and fields, or an excursion to an ancient site and museums can each give your days there a different focus.

The walk El nucli antic begins in the car park in front of Travessera de Sant Esteve and leads through the western gate of the town wall into the Old Town. Madremanya’s Old Town is entered through two former gates in the town wall: the western gate is on Carrer de Sant Esteve, while the northern gate is on Plaça de Quatre Vents. The two former gates mark the entrance to the historic centre.

Sant Esteve de Madremanya is a building from the late Romanesque period. The church is very wide and has a single nave, with an almost semicircular apse; the nave is 8.5 metres wide. This gives a cultural day out a set of specific architectural features rather than merely a general historical classification.

Paths through the spring area and the Gavarres

The hiking trails also have different focuses. The Font Picant area in the southeast of the municipality of Madremanya includes the spring and the remains of a former water-bottling plant. The route from Madremanya to Montnegre reaches Font Picant via a 500-metre detour from the path. The detour therefore leads to the spring and the former water-bottling plant.

The route Al peu de Gavarres passes through the forests of the Gavarres and through cultivated fields. The Route dels Pobles de Madremanya leads as far as the historic centre of Millars. The two routes therefore have different focuses: Al peu de Gavarres runs through forests and cultivated fields, while the Route dels Pobles leads as far as the historic centre of Millars.

Festivals and destinations in the surrounding area

The Festa Major de Madremanya takes place on the first weekend of August. Sant Iscle was originally the church of Millars Castle. Millars is therefore both a destination on the Route dels Pobles and a point of reference in the history of Sant Iscle.

Ullastret, an ancient site, lies in the area surrounding Madremanya. The Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya - Ullastret, the Museu d'Art and the Museu Arqueològic are also located nearby. The nearby area around Madremanya also includes the peaks of Puig del Home Gentil, Puig d'en Llac and Montigalar Petit. Puig d'en Brugada is a peak in the area surrounding Madremanya. Around Madremanya, local history, archaeology, art and landscape therefore come together.
