Santa Eulàlia de Riuprimer: Church, Festivals and Nature

The church of Santa Eulàlia was first mentioned in 899; in 1041, Abbot Oliba consecrated a second Romanesque religious building. The Mèder and the Riera de Muntanyola flow through the village. The Mèder is also known as the Riera de Santa Eulàlia, while the Riera de Muntanyola is referred to as the Rieral. Both waterways belong to the Ter river basin.

History and Church

During excavations in the church basement in 1987, an anthropomorphic tomb and remains of walls were discovered. The wall remains belonged to a building that predates the 11th-century Romanesque church.

Santa Eulàlia Church has an exhibition room featuring the Romanesque stone roof and a model of the church. An original 18th-century Catalan clock is also on display there.

An old wooden matraca has been preserved in the church. During Holy Week, it replaced the bells; it was restored and is one of the few well-preserved examples of its kind in Catalonia.

Castell de Torroella has been documented since 1130.

Festivals and Farming Traditions

The Festa Major d'Estiu of Santa Eulàlia de Riuprimer takes place on the first weekend of September. It developed from a celebration dating back to the late 19th century; in the 1970s, it was transformed into its current summer festival format.

The Festa del Segar i el Batre began in 1997 as a tribute to the agricultural work of the villagers' parents and grandparents. The programme for its 30th edition in 2026 included hand harvesting and threshing.

The programme also included building a hay shed and a workshop on identifying grain varieties.

At La Font Gran, a communal rice meal and a Sardana performance take place on the day of the tornaboda of the Festa Major d'Estiu.

Nature and Water

El Roure Gros is a centuries-old oak tree at the entrance to Santa Eulàlia de Riuprimer. On 4 May 2009, the tree was designated a tree of local interest.

Les Costes Males features fossil-rich, carbonate-bearing marl formations. These formations are considered to be of educational, tourist and scientific interest.

The Les Costes Males area is characterised by dense scrubland and steep slopes. Its runoff drains into the Mèder.

Near the southern entrance to Parc de Ventallola, there is an elevated viewpoint.

El Gorg de la Truja is a depression along the course of the Mèder. There, the river overcomes a difference in elevation of almost 30 metres along a stretch with several small waterfalls.

The largest waterfall ends in a wider, deeper pool. A local legend tells that a burning sow with piglets appeared at Gorg de la Truja through magic; this is said to explain the name of the gorg.

Font de Cal Ferrer was restored by the municipality in 2013.

Paths and Cycling Routes

El Gorg de la Truja can be reached from La Font Gran by following the Mèder. Alternatively, near kilometre 8 of the BV-4316, a turn-off leads to Mas de la Codina, followed by a path to the upper area of the gorg.

The non-motorised mountain bike circuit between Muntanyola and Santa Eulàlia de Riuprimer comprises three courses. Two courses run through the two municipalities, while the third serves as a connecting route.

Routes 2, 3 and 4 of the Centre BTT Plana de Vic are also assigned to Santa Eulàlia de Riuprimer.

The Pedala-Pedala cycling tour in Santa Eulàlia de Riuprimer reached its 26th edition. It has been organised under the auspices of the municipal administration for more than 25 years.
