Holiday apartment in El Papiol: castle, trails and local festivals
El Papiol combines castle history, distinctive village architecture, trails through the countryside and lively festivals. If you are considering a holiday apartment in El Papiol, you can tailor your plans to very different experiences: historic buildings, active outings, family activities or local traditions.
Castle, architecture and unusual details
The Castell del Papiol appears in a parchment document belonging to Ramon Berenguer III, Count of Barcelona. It has a rectangular layout and consists of several sections from different periods; the oldest part is on the ground floor. The Castell also contains the tomb of Galzeran Despapiol, a castle lord who fought in numerous battles under Jaume II the Just. The Casa Rectoral is the oldest house in El Papiol and was built around the castle.
Another architectural landmark is Cal Girona. The building is one of the best-preserved examples of El Papiol’s vernacular architecture from around the turn of the century and features compositional and decorative elements of pre-modernism. Cal Girona consists of two building sections. The taller one forms a corner tower with a lookout character on Carrer del Carme and is topped by a pointed pyramidal roof with green and red glazed ceramic tiles.
The Molí del Roig mill also tells of earlier uses: the metal windmill for raising water dates from the early 20th century and was built over a well to obtain water. It pumped water from a natural well into a basin to irrigate the gardens.
Landscape, trails and active days
Les Escletxes are visited by cavers, hikers and climbers; both artificial and sport climbing take place there. Numerous fossils point to a marine origin around 30 million years ago. This makes the site a place where nature observation combines with a geological detail that makes the outing especially vivid.
El Papiol can be reached by car via the B-23, B-30 or A-2; the C-1413a then leads directly into the town. On foot or by bicycle, you can reach El Papiol via mountain trails through the Collserola Natural Park and along the banks of the Llobregat. The Llobregat route of the Camí de Sant Jaume passes through the town on the route between Barcelona and Montserrat. The mountain route from El Papiol town centre to the Ermita de la Salut can also be covered on foot or by bicycle.
Festivals, cuisine and family experiences
The Aplec de la Salut del Papiol takes place on the second Sunday in September on the esplanade of the Ermita de la Salut at the foot of Puig Madrona. The Festa de la Cirera has been held every year since it was founded in 1983 and combines local agriculture with gastronomy and the tradition of traditional rural cuisine. El Papiol’s Festa Major takes place on the last weekend of July and on several days beforehand; it offers activities for all age groups, most of which are free.
The local festival culture includes the Cavall Armat, El Papiol’s fire beast. It appears at local Correfocs together with devil figures, drummers and grallers, and was created in 1998. For a playful family day, El Papiol Escape is designed as a puzzle game for the whole family.
Which holiday apartment suits your plans
The options reviewed range from culture and architecture to fossils and climbing, as well as walking and cycling routes, festivals and family activities. Therefore, consider whether you would like to focus your trip on architectural history, activities in Collserola and along the Llobregat, or local event dates. Arrival via several major roads, as well as the routes on foot and by bicycle, give you different ways to plan your trip without every day having to follow the same rhythm.
