Monistrol de Calders – Springs, Gorges and Cultural Heritage

Monistrol de Calders lies in a mountainous landscape characterized by alternating streams and ridges. Pine forests, holm oak forests and scrubland cover three quarters of the municipality. More than 30 springs rise at various locations; below the town, three streams join to form the Calders River.

Water and Landscape

Els Gorgs Blaus is a gorge formed by the Riera de la Golarda stream, which crosses a band of bluish conglomerate rock. Els Gorgs Blaus includes an approximately 40-metre-high cliff and water-shaped pools through which the current flows in a swirling pattern.

East of Monistrol de Calders lies the Gorg de Saladic. It forms where the Riera de Sant Joan crosses large slabs of rock. Parc Municipal El Serrat offers views of Monistrol de Calders and the Riera de Sant Joan.

Culture and History

The church of Sant Feliu de Monistrol de Calders has been documented since 1105; the present building dates essentially from the 18th century. The Cal Marfà estate has five inscribed or engraved door lintels, including the oldest inscription in the centre of Monistrol de Calders, dated 1615.

The door-lintel heritage of Monistrol de Calders includes engraved tool motifs identifying the occupations of the former residents of the houses. The lintel of Ca l'Estudiant shows the tools of a master mason.

Sant Pere Màrtir is a small chapel from the 18th century and is included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. The Capella de Sant Pere Màrtir stands on a ridge and offers views of Monistrol de Calders and the Pla de Bages plain.

The monument at Pla de Trullàs is a megalith with a simple chamber from the Bronze Age, dating approximately to the period between 2000 and 1500 BC; it was restored in 2005. Codro Bressol is a large boulder detached from the upper rockfall, with an anthropomorphic tomb carved into the rock dating from the early Middle Ages.

Hiking and Trails

The GR-177 long-distance trail passes through Monistrol de Calders and leads to Pla de Trullàs, where visitors can see the dolmen and visit the viewpoint. The entire trail is 109 km long and begins in Moià. The municipality also provides a map with eight hiking routes that pass by most of the notable sites in the municipality of Monistrol de Calders.

The Ruta de la Font de l'Estiraguers, Font del Collet i Parc del Serrat is a quiet circular walk within Monistrol de Calders. It passes the meander below the town, Font de Ca l'Estiraguers, Font del Collet and Parc del Serrat.

The Ruta de la Pedra Seca presents the millennia-old dry-stone wall-building technique, in which stones are laid without mortar or other binding material, allowing the resulting architecture to blend into its surroundings. The viewpoint at Pla de Trullàs can be reached via the trail from Granera or from the area of the Masia del Solà settlement and offers panoramic views of La Mola, the Pyrenees and the Vall de Marfà. The final section of the trail to the Capella de Sant Pere Màrtir remains well paved.

Activities and Guided Walks

The programme of Parc Sant Llorenç schedules guided activities in Monistrol de Calders for 2026 on the first and third Saturday of every month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; participation is free and available by prior registration.

The activity on the first Saturday of the month in the 2026 park programme is the cultural tour “Les escultures de Monistrol ens parlen”. The tour “Aigua i natura de Monistrol de Calders” takes place on the third Saturday of every month and presents cultural heritage connected with the use of water and biodiversity.
