Discover Canet de Mar: Modernism, Coast and Culture

The Casa Museu Lluís Domènech i Montaner consists of two buildings of significant heritage value. The first of these buildings is Can Rocosa, a 17th-century house. The second is Casa Domènech, a modernist house from 1919. After careful restoration work, the Casa Museu opened as a museum in 1991.

Culture

Castell de Santa Florentina developed from a fortified manor complex dating back to the 11th century. Since 1999, the library service has been housed in the modernist Ateneu Canetenc. The Ateneu Canetenc is a work by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

Every September, Canet de Mar hosts the Fira Modernista. During this event, people dressed as figures from the period walk through the streets. The event focuses on the architectural heritage, gastronomy and handicrafts. The customs of this era are also among the topics covered.

The celebration of the Mare de Déu takes place in Canet de Mar on 8 September. It is considered a small Festa Major there.

Food and Drink

A tasting of Vitralls can be included in pre-arranged group visits to the Casa Museu Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Vitralls are sweets made by local confectioners that are typical of Canet de Mar.

Nature

The Parc de la Misericòrdia was created in 1896 as an addition to the Santuari de la Misericòrdia. The park combines native Mediterranean plants with modernist architecture. This design includes monuments created by Josep Puig i Cadafalch. The Parc de la Misericòrdia also has a children's playground.

Platja de Canet has 1,500 metres of coastline. The beach is flat. Platja de Canet is easily accessible on foot or by bicycle. There is a supervised bathing area at Platja de Canet.

Activities

The Canet–La Creu hike follows the Riera dels Oms. Its route passes through lush vegetation to the hills around Canet. From there, it continues to the Creu de Pedracastell. The Creu de Pedracastell is a viewpoint overlooking the town of Canet.

The Club Vela Canet de Mar has organised sailing courses from that time to the present day. It also organises dinghy sailing regattas. It organises sociocultural activities as well.

Getting There

The Renfe R1 line provides the train connection. With this line, the train journey from Canet de Mar to Barcelona takes approximately 50 minutes.
