Zorita de los Canes invites visitors to travel through different layers of history and landscapes. The focus is on historic sites, riverside paths and activities on the water – a combination that places cultural discoveries and nature side by side. For planning your own visit, history, activity and relaxation can be weighted as separate priorities.

Culture and History

The Castle of Zorita was built by Muslims to control a strategic point on the Tagus. The present appearance of the Gothic castle was shaped by the masters of the Order of Calatrava.

Recópolis opens up another historical layer: the site was commissioned in 578 by King Leovigild in honor of the future King Recaredo. The Recópolis Archaeological Park comprises the archaeological remains of the Visigothic city of Recópolis and a visitor center.

The archaeological site covers approximately 33 hectares and is surrounded by a large wall with square towers and several entrance gates. Recópolis is the oldest early medieval palace-basilica complex in Western Europe.

When planning a cultural visit, architectural history, archaeological scale and ecclesiastical architecture can be considered as separate areas of interest. This structure makes the differences between the historic sites visible without reducing them to a single narrative.

Visiting

Zorita Castle can be visited for an admission fee and preserves towers, walls, cisterns and a Romanesque chapel. The Romanesque Church of San Juan Bautista has also been preserved in Zorita de los Canes.

The surviving architectural forms create a different emphasis from the expanse of Recópolis; anyone wishing to organize cultural topics can distinguish between the castle, the archaeological area and the ecclesiastical building.

Nature and Water

For riverside activity, Nature Trail Stage 15 leaves Zorita de los Canes and follows riverside paths along the Tagus toward Almoguera.

Stage 15 passes through the Sotos del río Tajo river reserve as well as the SCI, the SAC and the SPA of the Sierra de Altomira.

The Parque Fluvial del Tajo offers recreational areas, green spaces, activities on the water and suitable places for a picnic.

For planning your own day, the stage, the designated natural areas and the river park can be compared as different nature and water priorities. One follows a direction, another preserves a natural area, and the third combines green spaces with relaxation and water activities.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Zorita de los Canes, travel dates, the apartment or room category and cancellation policies can serve as separate points of comparison alongside the town's historical and landscape features. This keeps the accommodation decision separate from the attractions and natural areas described.
