Zaorejas: Tajo Canyon, Georoute and Rural Culture

Nature and viewpoints

In the surrounding area, the Mirador Zaorejas has wheelchair access and extensive accessibility facilities, as well as parking spaces, including reserved spaces for adapted vehicles. There is also a small ramp, an interpretation table, signs with Braille and raised lettering, and parallel guidance along the walkways. From there, the Mirador Zaorejas offers views of the meanders of the Tajo 250 metres below, the river canyon, and wooded cliffs and rock pinnacles.

The Mirador de Zaorejas can be reached via a track that climbs in a south-easterly direction and is located about five kilometres from Zaorejas. On the georoute between the Puente de San Pedro and the Mirador de Zaorejas, you can see the canyon of the Tajo River as well as the tuff formations of La Escaleruela and the Puente de San Pedro. In the municipality of Zaorejas, La Escaleruela is a seasonally active tuff waterfall; its spectacular terraced shape gives it its name. The Puente de San Pedro is freely accessible and is particularly often used as a swimming spot in summer. It can be reached via the CM-2015, which connects Zaorejas with Molina de Aragón; there is a car park next to the bridge.

Trails and activities

Stage 5 of the Camino Natural from Poveda de la Sierra to Zaorejas ends in Zaorejas. Stage 6 from Zaorejas to Villar de Cobeta shares its starting and ending sections in Zaorejas with Stage 5. The section of the Camino Natural associated with Zaorejas is designated as a cycling stage and corresponds to Stages 6 and 7.

Campamento Fuente de la Parra is an active tourism camp in Zaorejas, in the province of Guadalajara; its facilities are located in the Parque Natural del Alto Tajo. The activities it offers include canoeing, kayaking, climbing and walks in the surrounding area. It also rents out canoeing equipment and modern gear.

Culture and townscape

The Iglesia de Santo Domingo de Silos originally served as a watchtower. Zaorejas preserves narrow streets with low limestone houses that reflect the rural character of the town.

The Roman aqueduct stands slightly more than one kilometre south of Zaorejas town centre, at the Barranco of the Fuentelengua stream. It has a single opening, beneath which a Roman road once ran.

The mobile Fiesta Ganchera recreates traditional log rafting, accompanied by traditional food, music and folk games. It takes place in September in one of five municipalities: Peralejos de las Truchas, Poveda de la Sierra, Peñalén, Taravilla or Zaorejas.

River and interpretation

The Centro de Interpretación del Río Tajo is located in the centre of Zaorejas and explains the river from its source to its mouth in Portugal; particular attention is paid to its course through the Parque Natural del Alto Tajo. The exhibition covers the river’s species, vegetation in gorges and canyons, its geological origins, and the relationship between the river, people and culture.

The Centro de Interpretación del Río Tajo offers guided tours with environmental guides and environmental educators, as well as screenings of a documentary film. The centre is open year-round; for guided tours, times and availability should be checked.
