Vacation rental in Albendiego: Santa Coloma and the Bornoba Valley
Near Albendiego, the Ermita de Santa Coloma is located less than 400 metres from the centre of Albendiego. It was part of a former monastic complex associated with the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine; a community is documented there as early as the late 12th century. Santa Coloma is situated in an isolated landscape on the Bornoba River, surrounded by groups of trees and fields.
Culture
The central apse of Santa Coloma has three round-arched windows with archivolts on columns and vegetal capitals, as well as openwork stone tracery featuring stars, circles, triangles and rosettes. Albendiego is part of the Ruta del Románico Rural, a cultural route connecting various Romanesque churches and hermitages in the Sierra Norte. The churches along the Ruta del Románico Rural were built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries and display a pronounced Mudéjar influence.
Albendiego's patronal festivities take place on the last Sunday in January in honour of Santa Coloma. The Romería del Santo Alto Rey de la Majestad pilgrimage takes place on the first Saturday in September at the 1,852-metre-high summit of Alto Rey; the pilgrims also include people from Albendiego who climb up to the hermitage there.
Nature
Albendiego lies in a broad valley on the Bornoba River, with dense groups of trees and lush vegetation. The Molino del Callejón is considered the oldest mill in Spain to have retained all of its machinery. The cascades of the millrace of the Molino del Callejón can be seen between the groups of trees. A recreation area located further upstream from the Molino del Callejón combines ethnographic elements with slate construction.
Trails
The 50.1-kilometre GR® 167 between the Sorbe and Bornova includes Albendiego and has two variants. On the GR® 167, 95% of the route consists of tracks or trails; 85.5% of the route runs through the nature park. The first stage of the GR® 167 through the municipalities of Prádena de Atienza, Albendiego, Condemios de Abajo and Condemios de Arriba is 24.25 kilometres long, follows a linear route in one direction only and has a moderate difficulty level. On the section near Albendiego, the GR® 167 follows an old path past the cemetery to Santa Coloma and reaches Albendiego from the south. The different route lengths and trail types give you various benchmarks for planning your own trip.
