Condemios de Abajo between the Sierra, hiking trails and stone architecture
Condemios de Abajo is located in the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara Nature Park, in the Sierra de Ayllón area. The GR® 167 long-distance trail runs through the village between the Sorbe and Bornova rivers.
Nature and trails
La Común is a jointly used highland area between the Bornova and Sorbe drainage basins, which also includes Condemios de Abajo. The area lies in a mid-mountain zone at elevations above 1,300 m; Scots pines grow there, and fresh meadows open up between the trees. In damp hollows in the meadows of La Común, peat bogs can form, while cattle graze there.
The landscape around Condemios de Abajo combines traditional grazing areas and wooded sections with wide views of the mountain ranges bordering Segovia. The Río Condemios valley and the surrounding mountain landscape are also part of the scenery around the village. Peña del Palancar is a gorge where the rocks slope towards the deepest part of the canyon; its slopes are covered by extensive coniferous forest.
Hiking and landscape experiences
On the GR® 167, the section coming from Albendiego follows the Camino de la Fragua and reaches Condemios de Abajo at kilometre 21.8. From the municipal area, hikers can access trails that lead through oak forests, high-altitude meadows and areas of low scrub.
Outside Condemios de Abajo, the GR® 167 crosses the GU-213 road and re-enters the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara Nature Park. Activities in Condemios de Abajo include walks through the village’s stone streets and hikes along high-altitude trails. In the wider surroundings of Condemios de Abajo, two hiking trails follow the course of the Río Pelagallinas; one begins in the pine forests of Condemios de Arriba, and both lead to the place known as Cueva del Oso.

Villagescape and history
Condemios de Abajo preserves a cohesive villagescape of traditional stone architecture with thick walls, simple portals and pitched roofs adapted to the high-altitude climate. The compact streets display the typical character of mountain villages historically associated with livestock farming. The parish building dominates the village centre and forms part of the local historic heritage integrated into the traditional villagescape.
Condemios de Abajo belongs to the historic area around Atienza and to the medieval-influenced north of the province of Guadalajara. Local festivities focus on the summer and are connected with Condemios de Abajo’s identity as a mountain village.
The parish church on the outskirts of Condemios de Abajo is a simple 16th-century building; its entrance portal contains a depiction relating to the Blessed Sacrament. Inside the parish church are folk-style altarpieces with carvings and paintings from the 16th to the 18th century.
The dressed stones and finely interlaced capitals built into a house on Calle Mayor in Condemios de Abajo come from a former Romanesque church on the high plateau north of the village, along the road to Campisábalos.
