Culture

For visitors, Torija can be understood through a clearly datable building history: the current structure of the Castillo de Torija dates from the second half of the 15th century. The Castillo de Torija has a square floor plan with round corner towers. Visits to the Castillo de Torija are only possible with prior reservation for all visitors, whether individuals or groups. When planning the timing of your castle visit, this reservation is one of the details you should take into account in advance.

The CITUG is located in the Patio de Armas of the Castillo de Torija. The Museo del Viaje a la Alcarria is located in the Torre del Homenaje of the Castillo de Torija. It displays a facsimile of the notebook used by Camilo José Cela on his journey. You can use the spatial allocation of the institution and the part of the castle as a simple thematic structure for your own tour. The castle complex and the literary travel connection can be viewed as two different areas of interest.

Townscape

The Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). It is a 16th-century Renaissance church with a Plateresque arch leading to the presbytery. Torija’s Plaza Mayor features arcades and 16th-century Alcarrian capitals and forms a significant ensemble of vernacular architecture. During a tour, you can consider sacred architecture, military architecture and vernacular square architecture separately or arrange them in your own order.

Torija hosts the Certamen de Rondas Tradicionales Navideñas, which is recognized as an event of regional tourist interest. Those who view culture beyond buildings can classify the event as an independent focus alongside the townscape. For travel planning, architecture, the literary connection, the event and the landscape can serve as separate themes; you can decide how much weight to give each.

When comparing holiday apartments in Torija, you can compare travel dates, accommodation category and cancellation conditions on the respective offer page. Your choice of location can be guided by the cultural highlights or the landscape theme, depending on which aspect of your travel planning you wish to emphasize more strongly.

Landscape and Getting There

Torija can be reached via the A-2 in the direction of Zaragoza; take the Torija exit at kilometer 72. The Valle de Torija is a narrow valley between two Alcarrian plateaus. You can consider the specific exit and the description of the valley area separately in your preparations: one as travel information and the other as a landscape classification. Near the Castillo de Torija, remains of the town wall have been preserved at the barbacan; it serves as a viewpoint over the valley toward the provincial capital.
