Uceda – Churches, Jarama Landscape and Trails

In Uceda, the Iglesia de Santa María de la Varga stands beside the ruins of Uceda Castle. Since 1999, it has been recognised as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. The church was built over a former mosque and completed in the first quarter of the 13th century. Two splayed portals, three apses, and decorated capitals and corbels are among its surviving architectural features.

Culture

The Cartuja has an interesting cellar with brick barrel vaults and is now used as the town hall and as a rural hostel. Only fragments of the walls and several Mudéjar-style arches remain of the Convento de San Francisco; part of its former water-supply channel can still be visited. The Iglesia parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Varga is a 16th- and 17th-century Neoclassical church with a single-nave interior and elaborate stucco decoration.

Festivals

The Belén Viviente de Uceda, performed by the residents of Uceda, is recognised as a festival of provincial tourist interest and takes place on the weekend closest to 25 December. The Fiestas de Uceda, held in honour of the Virgen de la Varga, take place from 14 to 17 August. The two festivals therefore mark different periods of the year.

Nature

Uceda’s natural landscape receives water from the upper course of the Río Jarama. It is suitable for hiking, mountain biking and horse riding, and offers opportunities for water-based recreational activities. The landscape along the Río Jarama is characterised by poplars, elms, ash trees and willows.

Trails

The trails differ in their starting points and destinations. One route begins at the Iglesia de Santa María de la Varga, leads to the Balcón de la Sopeña viewpoint and follows a medieval path to the river. Another starts at Uceda’s Plaza Mayor and leads to a viewpoint offering panoramic views over the Jarama Valley. A route starting from the Plaza Mayor crosses the river and leads to the former Fábrica de Harinas in the Comunidad de Madrid. In the 19th century, the building was used to supply electricity to the surrounding towns and today hosts various events. Another path runs along the Río Jarama to a Granja escuela and continues to a small weir with a suspension bridge.
