The Picota de Alhóndiga, also known as the Rollo jurisdiccional, symbolises the granting of town privileges and the administration of justice in the Middle Ages. As a Rollo de ajusticiar, it dates from the 16th century, is one of the town’s most representative heritage features and is considered direct evidence of its historical autonomy.
Culture and History
The Iglesia de la Natividad de Nuestra Señora defines the traditional centre of Alhóndiga and is the municipality’s most important religious building. A visit to Alhóndiga allows you to walk around this traditional town centre. Alhóndiga Castle stands on a hill where the ruins of a church now remain.
The Camino de la Virgen del Saz trail passes the San Roque Hermitage in Alhóndiga. The Hermitage of the Virgen del Saz had already been built at the beginning of the 16th century and was later remodelled and extended. Alhóndiga’s present parish church is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and was inaugurated on 5 September 1846. Alhóndiga is one of the places in the Diocese of Sigüenza-Guadalajara where Saint John the Baptist is especially celebrated.
For planning your own days, the historical evidence, traditional town centre and sacred sites can be considered cultural highlights. The landscapes and trails, with their hills, valleys, gorges and wooded slopes, offer different impressions. These themes can therefore be given separate emphasis without reducing the town to just one aspect.
Landscape
Alhóndiga lies in La Alcarria, in a landscape of hills, olive groves and cereal fields. The higher points of Alhóndiga offer views over the Tajo Valley and the surroundings of the Entrepeñas Reservoir. The landscape along the Camino de la Virgen del Saz includes the deep valley of the Arlés River, clay ravines, slopes covered with olive trees and Mediterranean woodland.
For travel planning, this creates a contrast between the view across the Tajo Valley and the more closely varied surroundings of the Arlés River.
Trails and Surroundings
The hiking stage from Alhóndiga to Berninches is 6.9 km long. A clearly specified route length can be considered in personal planning alongside the other cultural and landscape themes. In the surroundings of Entrepeñas, a cultural visit can be combined with water tourism activities and nature.
The different themes can be considered separately: cultural highlights in Alhóndiga, landscape and water tourism. Anyone wishing to compare different daily rhythms can incorporate these aspects into their own planning.
When comparing holiday apartment offers in Alhóndiga, travel dates, room category and cancellation policies may be different points of comparison. These details form a separate comparison area; the Picota, La Alcarria landscape and water tourism remain separate themes for planning your own trip.
