Castilnuevo – Castle History, the Río Gallo and Holiday Apartments

History

The castle of Castilnuevo dates back to the 12th century. Alfonso I el Batallador used the castle site as a base for the siege and conquest of Molina de Aragón. Historically, Castilnuevo belonged to the Señorío de Molina. The castle is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. Its historical context closely connects the village with the medieval history surrounding Molina de Aragón, although the castle itself is not accessible from the inside.

Culture and Villagescape

In the village centre, the parish church of San Pedro Apóstol is Castilnuevo’s main building and forms the centre of the village. Castilnuevo preserves a compact rural village structure with traditional stone houses. The church of Virgen del Valle is located 200 metres from Castilnuevo on the GU-9059, before the road crosses the Río Gallo. The church of Virgen del Valle has a bell gable and a single-nave layout. It also features a carved wooden coffered ceiling that was added in the 19th century. The architectural features of the two churches and the traditional village structure can be viewed as distinct cultural focal points.

Castilnuevo’s patronal festival in honour of Saint Peter takes place on 29 June. This date complements the permanently visible elements of the village centre, church architecture and rural character with a fixed feature of the local annual calendar.

Natural Environment

Castilnuevo lies in the valley of the Río Gallo, on the banks of the river, which is a tributary of the Tajo. In this section of the river, the water is clear and rich in trout. The Burbullón spring, which carries particularly abundant water, is located near Castilnuevo. Castilnuevo is part of the Molina-Alto Tajo UNESCO Geopark. The riverbank, spring and geopark offer different spatial scales for personal planning: from the immediate watercourse to the broader landscape context.

Castilnuevo is included in the Las Tres Taifas hiking route of the Camino del Cid. GPS tracks and waypoints for the Camino de los Tratantes are available for download.
